I'm not quite finished, so I'll post a final impression once I'm done done, but I wanted to post this for two reasons. First, to see who has played it and enjoyed it, and to ask why they think the game hasn't gotten more fanfare. And second, to highly suggest it to those looking for something a bit different. Not that the core components of the game are new, because they aren't. But it's a game that combines souls-like, boss focused combat with light puzzling and platforming, with beautiful art direction and score, with an understated but fulfilling story threading through the game. I'm not sure if I've come across anything with quite that combination of elements.

It retails for $40 on Steam, but routinely goes on sale for $20. And while I think it's worth it for $40, there's no reason not to wait for a $20 drop. It's not on sale now, so nothing to jump on, but just wanted to flag it for anyone who thinks the above formula might be interesting. Hopefully the ending doesn't break anything, but I've genuinely enjoyed the last 20 or so hours of game play.

Wrapped that up a bit quicker than I was expecting. Last fight was fun, and the ending worked well with the story. Really glad I found this one. Might do a NG+ run after a cooldown period. Really worth playing, especially for those looking for something a little out of the norm.

Got it on sale a few weeks ago and haven't gotten around to playing it yet. Definitely looking forward to it.

It's currently on sale in the Playstation Store for $18. Sale ends 2/2.

I thought it played really well with kb/m, but a couple of the negative Steam reviews I noticed whined about needing to use a controller (though I don’t understand why that justified a negative review…), so I imagine it plays as well or better on console with a controller. Give it a go, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask

I thought it was alright, the difficulty went from zero to a hundred pretty fast for me though.

See it on sale all the time on Steam. Have watched the trailer for it prob 10 times but never pulled the trigger. Beautiful looking game.

Your review just sold me. I'll give it a shot.

Took me about 20h, but I was taking things slow, exploring to find different things. You can blow through the main game probably in about 10h, depending how good you are. Would probably take 35h+ to do all of the time trials, etc.

I’ve read that the story mode is very, very easy. But yeah, the higher difficulty levels are very hard. Though I never considered it unfair.

I finally got it on sale during Christmas sales. I plan on trying it out later this year. When? Not sure yet. Too many games on the plate.

Completely understand. My Steam library is extensive…

As a bit of info for those looking to jump in, I was playing at 3440x1440 with all settings maxed out, DLSS Quality on, and I stayed locked in at 120fps, with occasional very short drops to about 112fps. 5800x and an RTX 3080.

Yea, i've also found that some games "normal" is difficult for me, but the next tier down is basically god mode. I finished it but man some of those fights took many many tries. I was on controller so some of the shots were hard to make super accurate.

The woodsmith i thought was nuts hard. I am old, and i don't play any souls type games, so talent is definitely a factor.

Yeah, the game definitely isn't built with the intent for you to beat a boss on your first try (though I did manage it with a couple of them). Some took quite a few tries, including the Woodsmith. That was actually one of the harder ones for me, and I think I had to walk away for a bit because I was getting frustrated.

Boss combat isn't unlike Souls games, in that you're having to learn tells and weaknesses a bit through trial and error. I would also say it's similar to the Valkyrie fights in God of War. You have to learn the mechanics, you have to execute, and you can't get greedy when you get their health bar down, but if you manage that, it's perfectly possible to kill them without taking damage in minutes, as there are no bullshite "cheat" mechanics.

Put another way, I found some of the fights to be extremely frustrating at first, but none of them felt "unfair" or that I was "unlucky". And when I finally won, I didn't feel "lucky". I just executed well that run. To me, that's the making of good combat.

But yeah, if you go into the game thinking "oh, this is really pretty, and these Rots are adorable" without realizing what combat is like, it's a bit of a shock to the system, not unlike this meme

This is why i suck at videogames lol. I get greedy, and die. Then i do it again. Then i say, ok, lets settle down and take some time - stage 2 starts, all in attack, and die.

Yeah, nothing like watching several minutes of flawless execution go up in smoke in five seconds

Pro tip for anyone getting into the game: the parry window is notoriously short. Like, stupidly short. Very few people seem to be capable of parrying consistently. Further, the payoff for a successful parry is fairly minor. So, don't bang your head against the wall on it. When it doubt, dodge. You'll find it far less frustrating.

Actually, I also just remembered for those who played the game in the past: the devs actually released an Anniversary update a few months ago, which added a fair amount of functionality and replayability: LINK /
