Is the VGA slowly becoming a study on bro culture

The other night was quite easily the worst VGA I think I’ve ever seen. The following happened:
- Sony and Microsoft dick measuring
- Geoff vouching for Canadians
- Stadia and anti vaping ads
- Green Day
- Magic the Gathering card game spam
- THE LAST REVEAL OF THE DAY WAS A F&F MOVIE TEASE.
- No Nintendo presence past the pre-show and that one cool final fantasy trailer.
Like, they want to brag about the numbers they have above other award shows, but they skim over awards in 3s. There’s so much pageantry but it’s in all the wrong places. The ads totally pay for the show and it shows. The VGA is like that kid that wants to join the cool kids club or table in the lunchroom but has no business being there. It was so cringey and the way Geoff worded certain things and how much the battle royales were featured just showed me where the state of true “gaming” was.
The mainstream is games with high graphical fidelity and shooters. Which doesn’t mean either are bad. But like metroidvanias in the indie scene, the big time AAA scene is becoming saturated with them. I really don’t mean to be judgmental but Fortnite really brought to light all these issues with the easy rise to popularity of people’s subs due to its explosion on the scene. People like Ninja remind me of Lamar Jackson when he went to the Heisman ceremony in 2016 dressed like a total clown. And then retired Reggie Fils-Aime walks on the stage like a total chad delivering in my opinion probably the speech of the year in popular media. So, this is just my little rant on the whole thing. I honestly think if they told everyone Smash wasn’t gonna be there, the total viewership would’ve been cut in half too.
Hope y’all have had a good day.

Happens when the host is in bed with some of the games producers, and there isn't much outside input despite what he claims.

VGA = Video Game Awards right?
I've never watched one. Maybe like the first year one on Spike TV during HS.
That stuff is just so damn corney.

One thing I'm getting tired of are these drama channels on YouTube.
Video game channels that just speak about the negative things with gaming and nothing else.
I love YongYea but all the time negativity wears me down.

I have no idea who would watch these awards shows when you can literally just read a recap the next day and see who won what awards.
Award shows in general are dying because they are boring as frick and the public has gradually seen them for what they are, industry PR.

Agreed, same with The Quartering. They are smart guys with good opinions but they seem to actively seek out topics they can complain about, even if they are trivial things. Guess those videos get more views or something. I'd like to see them do more videos on stuff they actually like and enjoy.

Cynically, I feel like some of the guys in the pop culture/gaming/political spheres come to recognize their audience and actively seek to stoke the flames to keep their viewership up.
Tim Pool is another guy who plays up outrage for clicks.

Yep.
I've come to realize, like most of us have, you guys' points a long time ago.
I'm just done with it. I get depressed enough about real-life problems and feeding that hatred flam isn't healthy.

Wrong. Last year’s was actually pretty solid and no Nintendo game was even really up for any serious award let alone GOTY, which God of War ran away with easily.
MK11 was announced. Outer Worlds. Joker’s surprise announcement. New Dragon Age. I own a PS4 and many games on Steam that consoles simply can’t handle effectively. I bought a PS4 strictly for Persona 5 and Spider-Man.
But I guess I just like to be in the moment. I like that sense of excitement that comes with live reveals. And god I’ve never seen such an abomination of corporate vouching in my life. I might think of getting some of those LoL RPGs if they end up being pretty good. But god damn, half the stuff they showed in TGA will age horribly. Microsoft is hell bent on creating boring hyper real games that nobody wants except military trainers and engineers which is why the Switch just overtook its lifetime a week ago. European and American studios are just such a disappointment with unique IP compared to Japanese ones like Capcom, Square Enix, pre-Santa Monica Sony and Nintendo. Blizzard used to be my absolute jam and companies like Westwood but then those fricks from EA absorbed and shut down those studios when they started falling off.
Lone bright spots I can think of of the top of my head are with no blemishes are Sony Santa Monica, Retro and CDPR in Sweden. I guess Rare might fall under that category but Sea of Thieves is...still meh to me after the update.

This is Geoff Keighly's new thing. A lot of it is paid advertising for upcoming games and he has a lot of his buds show up (Reggie and Kojima). I think he's only a few years into it so I'm sure it's still a work in progress.

Fils-aime, whatever he's doing after leaving nintendo.

Always liked Reggie. Felt bad for him, no telling the goofy shtt he had to field with that weird cultural "lost in translation" situation.

High graphical fidelity yes. Genre is a little more nuanced. This isn't 2010 where everyone was interested in making CoD knockoffs, but you have games like Apex Legends, Battlefield, and Rainbow 6 Siege which carry mainstream popularity.
