5 is plenty. I have 3.0 mbps and play just fine. Hell i ran 1.5 mbps and had no issues. As long as it is hardwired in, and no other devices online.

to respond to this and someone else above, Ill be in a 2br all by myself in Hammond, so Bandwith wont be a problem at all. Im probably going to get the 5-15mbps from everyone's good responses. I appreciate everyones responses.

appreciate your response as well. As far as latency goes, how can I tell how good that will be? Is that more decided on how strong the connection is the area Ill be living in? Regardless of whether its cox, at&t, etc. TIA

I have a question about this. Are actual DL speeds what they advertise? Im paying for 15mb/sec but actual downloads on something like steam, is around 1.8mb/sec. Are actual speeds 1/8th of whats advertised?

There's really no way to tell. There are many, many variables between you and whatever server you connect to far off on the internet.

You get a "best effort" speed. Only fiber-to-the-home and (sometimes) DSL networks give you all of that bandwidth. If you're paying for 15 but getting 2, that's a problem and you need to report a trouble. If you're paying for 15 and get 10, then that's likely just overhead and/or shared bandwidth and you are fine.

Isps rip you off on purpose, hoping the average consumer doesnt realize they arent getting what they pay for.

Check speedtest.net and run a speedtest. If the numbers dont match, call and bitch

I run a speedtest and it says 15, but when I say download a game on steam, it peaks at around 1.8mb/sec.I've read actual download speeds are 1/8th of your package speed.

man. i don't know where you people live. but the internet options suck balls there. in Spring, TX (Houston suburbia). I just got a move in special from Comcast for 250 mbps for $59.99 a month locked in for 13 months. Hardwired I pull 250-260 mbps down, 25 mbps up, with a 6-8 ms ping. Using an Amplifi Mesh WiFi Router and access points I pull down 240 mbps anywhere in the house.

AT&T fricking you Louisiana baws.

Well, your internet bandwidth is measured in megabits.. but your downloads are measured in megabytes.. and there are 8 megabits in a megabyte, so yes. 15Mbps is about 1.8MBps

I can't speak for all ISPs, but this is certainly untrue for the one I work at.

Im on fiber in BR. No worries here.

Dis baw in the OP is in hammond.

Anyways, ISPs in north america are generally a rip off compared to most of the world but i think thats mostly due to

1) FCC
2) how big the USA is geographically

Comparing our internet to say, south korea, isnt really fair. But i think ISPs capitilize on that fact

Anyways i really think this dide should spend the extra 360 a year for the upgraded package if he plans to stream video

I play with <1. Granted it's frustrating but it works. 5 would be fine.
