In the midst of the MSFT/ABK aquisition, there's been a tiny rumor about Sony/Take Two....

should've done it 20 years ago when they had the chance.

from a little searching, it started in March...

Sony is reportedly preparing to buy Take-Two Interactive - xfire.com March 2, 2023

quote:

Believe it or not, Take-Two isn't as large as most believe, and buying it could cost considerably less compared to Activision Blizzard to buy. The holding company behind the developers of NBA 2K (2K Games), Grand Theft Auto (Rockstar Games), and WWE 2K (Visual Concepts) is has a market cap of "only" $20 billion.

Is Sony Really Buying Take-Two Interactive? No, Probably Not - playstationlifestyle.com March 3, 2023

quote:

Sony is looking to buy Rockstar publisher Take-Two Interactive in a blockbuster deal, according to the latest bizarre acquisition rumor to hit the internet. The deal is supposedly being brewed in response to Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, but as with anything that sounds too weird to be true, that’s also likely the case here.

quote:

So is the rumor credible? Despite it gaining considerable traction on Twitter, the source here is highly questionable. LumberjackRy claimed that they correctly leaked the PlayStation Studios acquisition of Bungie, though we could find no such evidence of that claim (via Twitter). So if you were excited to see the Rockstar Games and 2K publisher being under Sony’s management, you’ll likely be left disappointed.

an interesting Reddit comment:

quote:

quote:

Sony doesn't have the cash on hand to pull this off.

That's...a tad myopic.

Microsoft purchase of Activision is unique because it is a cash acquisition. Its not really the norm.

For example, Disney borrowed just under $20 billion to buy out 20th century Fox. Musk used a similar tactic to purchase twitter.

The ol' leveraged buyout.

Then you have the fact that Sony is sitting on about $300 billion in assets.

Liquidation is another potential avenue.

It's not that they can't pull it off. It's more likely that they won't consider 'pulling it off'.

Sony did recently acquire a new AI company based in the UK, iSIZE.

Sony Interactive Entertainment to Acquire iSIZE - sonyinteractive.com

quote:

Founded in 2016 and based in London, iSIZE has a team of talented engineers and technical experts who have developed a suite of software solutions to optimize video. For example, the company built an AI-based perceptual preprocessing solution that allows conventional, third-party encoders to produce higher quality video at a significantly lower bitrate.

Can't wait for Sony to make GTA and RDR exclusives, proving they are the truly the most shite organization in the gaming world

Take Two is a publicly traded company. They would have to sell to the highest bidder. Sony doesn't have the ability to be that.

Yeah, that would be the only way. I guess stranger things have happened but that seems hard to believe.

Sony market cap is $107B
Take Two is $22B

MSFT market cap is $2.65T

Microsoft should hop in there and start a bidding war or just start buying up TTWO to drive up stock price, because Sony is nothing but a whining bitch.

microsoft should just purchase sony and shut them down completely since they have the means.

no more playstation
no more tvs
no more stereos
no more cinema

shut it all down and take over the IPs... and then ruin them like they do everything else.

eta: on a serious note, mircosoft just spent $60+ billion on a developer/publisher. i don't know if phil could talk the higher ups into another large aquisition this soon. they definitely could, but would they?

Honestly, this is just a rumor with no substance. Take Two has no reason to sell to anyone.

Buying up stock in a hostile takeover sort of scenario wouldn't be the best interests of Sony or Microsoft tbh.

When have we ever had a 10 page thread about a merger being good for the industry? Could you link to that thread?

That thread was about the merger and I updated it as news came out. Yes I do believe the MS/ABK merger is good for the industry, but that has nothing to do with the purpose of the thread in your image.

Could you please link to the 10 page thread about a merger being "good for the industry?" I don't recall ever seeing one.

ETA: In fact, I'd say quite a number of posters in that thread were opposed to the merger completely. It's honestly hard to imagine describing that thread the way that poster did. Assuming he's not an idiot, that can't possibly be the thread he was referencing.

I remember reading that Microsoft was “revolutionizing the industry” and that this merger was going to “offer gamers access to the entire GP catalog via any mobile device with some make believe App Store” that doesn’t exist or some bullshite like that.

No, you don't remember that at all. You're conflating two different things.

1. All Microsoft first part games are already available on the Game Pass app to be played on mobile devices through the Cloud (which sucks for most of the games and is only marginally viable at this point). It's only a matter of time before all ABK games will join in this way.

and

2. Buying ABK was primarily because MS wants to start its own app store to compete with Google and Apple because MS currently doesn't have much of a mobile presence at all.
