How long has the role play servers been a thing for GTA 5?

I stumbled on Summit1Gs videos and there were clips of him getting pulled over by cops (actual players) and getting arrested and the works. Are these PC mods or is this something that Rockstar implemented recently?

They are mods, really took off a few months ago with an event and all of the bigger streamers played it. Now they still play it a lot just for how fun it is.

It is not done by Rockstar.
Privately ran servers that are screened to even be able to get in.
And it has been a thing for years. Recently made a comeback on twitch.

I tried watching Summit’s clips on it but they’re all 30+ mins long. I’m good
