Help me think of a game

it's a PS era JRPG. You had a moderate cast of characters, maybe 4-6. I think you were in kind of an old school fantasy universe and then the big reveal was you were actually in a simulation or game. Then you broke into the real world (I think) which was much more futuristic.

I just remember playing this exact game back in like middle school or early high school. It was the first thing that introduced the simulation theory to me and it blew my mind

ive actually been meaning to start the star ocean series for a couple years now. i think theyre all on ps network. they just remastered the 2nd one last year which is the most beloved of the series. ill get to them one day

Apparently 3 (the one I’m talking about) was so controversial that every one since has been a prequel to 3
