Both cards are great, I went 3090. I actively use DLSS a lot and wanted all the vram I could get because of certain things I do outside of gaming like 3D renders. Plus my monitors are older and just support gsync and not both.

You can’t go wrong either way, it would be a great time to be computer builders if you could get the damn cards and CPU’s.

Oh absolutely, and to be clear, I'm only speaking to gaming as a usage case. If you have a professional use for it, the more vram, the better

Take that for what you will, or if you want to post the games you generally play, we can see about giving you more detailed advice.

To be fair, gaming has been more or less a distraction, so I haven't gone crazy with them. Just Overwatch, the occasional Fortnite game with my nephews, things like that. Still play GTA V on occasion.

Will be getting some newer ones though:
Cyberpunk 2077
Baldur's Gate 3 (already own the pre-release)
Assassin's Creed Valhalla (just holding off buying atm)
Star Wars: Squadrons (Question on this - does it play well with a controller, or do you really want a joystick?)

Also thinking on these:
No Man's Sky
Horizon Zero Dawn

While your monitor can do 144hz, what’s your target minimum frame rate?

As an example, I don’t like to play games at leas than 80fps. Lower than that and I’ll likely either play with the settings for wait for a later gpu upgrade.

Haven't had the horsepower to push anything really high to begin with; I liked being around 90 FPS playing OW. Definitely would never want to go below 60 again, and going higher would be nice. Something that actually got to 144 would be ideal.

Based on that chart looks like I can run CP at ultra settings at 1440 with my 1080TI. Hmm... decisions decisions.

So, you're going to have to pick your poison a bit. There isn't a gpu on the market today, from the 3090 on down, that can consistently hit 144fps at the resolution you're pushing. You need to make a call about whether you're trying to get the best you can now, or whether you save a bit of money now and upgrade sooner than you otherwise would have.

To give you an example, I finished a build a couple of months ago. I was planning to get a 3080FE, but couldn't get my hands on one. In late October, the "add to cart" button flashed yellow on BestBuy for a 3070 FE, so I pulled the trigger, for a couple of reasons. First and most obvious is that there was no guarantee I would be able to get my hands on a 3080 anytime soon, so bird in hand and whatnot. But second, I'm playing at 3440x1440, which is a step above you in total pixel count. And I play big, sexy single player games at max settings. I knew that even a 3080 wasn't going to put me at 144hz (where my monitor maxes). So I pulled the trigger on the 3070 with an eye towards upgrading in probably a year, year and a half, instead of the 2+ years I was originally planning. This gives me time to play through my backlog of games that the 3070 can easily push, then about the time I'm done with them, Nvidia will be releasing their Hopper line, and depending on what they look like, I might go whole hog.

But anyway, that's a very long winded way of saying that there's no correct answer; you just need to decide on your short to mid term priorities and go from there.

Now, because they didn't specify on the chart, I assume "run" means "averages 60fps", so ymmv
