GF totally shocked me and got me a switch. Haven’t owned a Nintendo console since the gamecube and know little about it. She’s not a gamer but she’s interested in something easy to play as a 2 player game. She said she ordered Mario party but currently it’s sitting in the box without a game(going out of town this weekend but I’ll pick something up on Sunday.

Reading I hear the best games are Zelda, Smash, and Super Mario Oddesey. Also reading that I may need a screen protector, case, and a controller. Any advice?

Do you game on any other consoles? If not, there are some "older" games that are available on switch, which you could get cheaper on other consoles or on PC, but if not then you at least have an option with the switch, like Skyrim and Doom.

I don't know if the screen protector is really necessary unless you plan on playing a lot in the portable mode

Definitely get a pro controller

I don't play portable at all, but glad I got a screen protector.

Just the few times docking and undocking I have scratches.

Screen protector for sure. Case only if you expect to be carrying it around with you. It only comes with one controller so you will definitely need at least one more.

I would highly recommend paying for Nintendo's online service. It's $20 a year and it gets you access to a library of NES and SNES games, as well as the extremely addictive Tetris 99 game. Totally worth it.

As for games, since you haven't owned a Nintendo in quite some time I would suggest:

Legend of Zelda BotW
Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze
Mario Odyssey
Smash Bros
Mario Kart 8
Hyrule Warriors

I don't like shooters much, but my kid enjoys Splatoon 2 if you're into those types of games.

If you like XCOM type games, get Mario Rabbids. I honestly don't generally like those types of games, but I enjoyed this one. No multiplayer though.

They don't really have anything like game pass or EA access, but the Nintendo online subscription gives you access to a library of original NES and Super NES games.
