GPU

This x10000000

You'll see far more performance jump with a new video card then a new cpu/mobo/ram (you'd have to get new ram with any new cpu/mobo) combo at 1440p.

If you can swing a cheap 4770k or 4790k and overclock the snot out of it, the higher clock and extra threads would pair nicely with a new video card (say something like an RTX 2080 or the amd 5700)

Upgrade that 970. Not you, but I’ve been amazed at the amount of people who expect top performance with a 970 with 2019. Steam discussion boards are loaded with these people.

Without RGB, he'll be resigned to buying creampie panties from twitch titty streamers to satisfy his cuckold fantasies.

Make sure you have a SSD for your OS and your games (so decent sized - thankfully they've come down a LOT in price over the years).

If you store a lot of documents, music, etc - get a HDD for that. Anything that's an application you want to run, throw on that SSD.

I'm going to jump in on this instead of starting a new thread with the same question.

Intel Core i7 Quad 3.40Ghz
NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti
16GB RAM
250GB SSD + 1TB HDD

Where would I get the best bang for my buck on an upgrade??
I'm thinking a better GPU. GTX 1660 or 2060??
Looking for something in the $300 range.

Depends on how strict your budget is and how good your monitor is.

I run an RTX 580 and have no complaints.
I imagine if I had a much nicer screen I'd want to upgrade though.

If you're deadset on the $300 cap and can find one with a fair amount of memory, I'd go with the 2060 over the 1660 just so you're on the newer chipset when they have a lot of titles taking advantage of it.

If you rarely buy newer games, 1660

I'm running a 60hz monitor right now.

Would I be better off with a $200 GPU upgrade and a $200 144hz monitor upgrade? I might be able to squeeze a little more on the budget.

I would go for a $400 graphics card and then upgrade the monitor down the road

All day. When I "upgraded" my GPU two years ago, it was during the last mining craze and ended up with a 1060 because it was the only thing that was reasonably priced. It's okay but that it. I wish I could SLI it.

I just can't agree with this. I know your stance but a RX 590 or gtx 1660 is capable of way over 120fps in most games.

590 is 189 now and a 1660 is around 215. Couple that with a $150 144hz monitor, that's a better experience.

Next step up from a 1080p/144hz is a 1440p/144hz and that is still somewhat expensive at around $300. I'd just wait until the prices come down on the 1440p monitors before I worry about the graphics card for that setup. Both of those cards are still good at 1440p. So if he were to spend the 300 now on a gpu, he would later have to pay 300 for a monitor which is 600.

Gaming at 60hz is miserable. That is one of the largest advantages over console gaming. I dunno why you wouldn't want to experience that when you first create the machine.

Because a monitor will last. A cheap video card wont last over a better one.

It's that simple
