The 2500k has an unlocked modifier and had almost identical benchmark scores. The 2500k ocs to 4.0ghz with a $20 heat sink giving it a huge advantage over that i3 you like. Ivy ocs like shite.
This guy is getting a PC for his kid, so it's highly doubtful that overclocking will be involved. The 3470 is a CHEAPER and better option. He'll have about $40-50 extra to spend just by getting the i5 3470 than 2500k (get a cheaper mobo due to not OCing).
Saying the ivy bridges OC like shite is laughable and dumb.

I know that. I never once suggested him to get an AMD, for a budget build its superior. The performance between the i3 and AMD processors is almost exactly the same, and most AMD processors are cheaper. The chart you linked does nothing to show that AMD is "4 years behind intel." I just checked out some other benches (anandtech/cpubench) and they had some AMDs benched higher than the i3. Of course the AMDs arent on the same level as the i5 and i7, those are better. They are not "getting destroyed" by intel, you're just basing that off their comparison to the i5 and i7 chips, which they were never competing with until they brought out their new A10 chip.

Furthermore, AMD is moving away from the high end desktop market entirely - looking for 50% of its revenue stream to come from places other than the PC (mobile, tablet, etc).
It was a big announcement out of the CEO and well covered on Tom' Hardware. One would think someone who peruses the site often would have ran across the article.
