For anyone who hasn't noticed, FGs have basically entered a golden age/renaissance era for the genre.

Online is actually consistently good now.
They're easier to get into than before by a long shot.
Skill ceilings are still tremendous.
Resources for the genre have increased significantly.
Player numbers have been higher than before so it's easier for new players to encounter other new players.

Anyone else here been playing them lately?

been enjoying my time with tekken 8. my brother and i use to make regular trips to the mall and later the rec at lsu pumping quarters into tekken 3, tag, and 4. i dropped off after that but always wanted to get back to it. so with 8 coming out this year with good reviews dived right back in.

my reflexes definitely not as fast as they used to be but i cans till hang

Not to thread hijack too much, but can anyone tell me the closest thing to Fight Night Champion for PS5/Steam these days? I get a craving every few months to play Fight Night again but haven’t really found anything close. Was never big into the “arcade” style fight games but someone tell me if I’m seriously missing out on some of the newer games today.

I tried Tekken 8, but it didn't stick with me personally. I know some friends who are huge fans of it though, and it is very fun to watch

I was at Combo Breaker this past weekend, and the top 8 for Tekken was wildly entertaining.

I've been mainly playing Granblue myself with Guilty Gear and Street Fighter here and there.

At a glance on Fight Night, I don't know of anything truly akin to it these days, but the closest within regular fighting games is probably Tekken.

I do recommend giving the newer games a spin to see if they appeal to you now.

Short list of options to pick up:
- Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising (Has a free version you can play, just has a limited roster)
- Street Fighter 6
- Guilty Gear Strive

And of course there's Tekken 8 which is a 3D fighter whereas the three above are all 2D.

have played guilty gear in forever and skipped the last street fighter. both are great series though. No experience with granblue. in my youth id play almost any fighter, but now with limited time i have to be more selective. It takes so much time and practice to get good in a fighter its hard to spread that out

love the fight night series but i dont think there is anything like it on console now.

i did see a boxing game on steam.....hitting google to see if i can find it.
its called undisputed. looks like its got some middle of the road reviews. may be worth checking out.

there is also the UFC series, which, ive heard also mixed things about. some folks love it, some hate it. seems ot be very little in between opinions.

i wish they would do another fight night proper really.

I find this to be the exact opposite. Modern fighting games are gross DLC factories with virtually no single player content to speak of that cater to only the sweatiest of gamers.

It was my first time at CB, and it was probably my favorite tournament experience so far. I've been to Frosty Faustings, CEOtaku, and Texas Showdown, but CB was a better overall tournament experience than all 3 imo.

I understand that
I have selected Granblue as my competitive fighter, and any others I play are for fun/more casual for now. Trying to grind fgs while having a proper career is non-trivial.

I don't have an issue with the DLC model in modern FGs personally.

Single player content has been a hot button issue going back years since I grew up playing MK a lot for just the single player stuff whereas now I play FGs mainly for multiplayer instead.

For single player, it really depends on what you want imo. Some games have single player entirely focused on story content rather than emphasizing different game modes for replayability (Guilty Gear Strive fits this to a tee).

MK was basically the gold standard for single player content to my knowledge, but Idk how much they have in MK1 since I didn't pick that one up.

At the end of the day, it's a naturally competitive genre so it's going to target that audience more. I do think it's much easier to get into that part of it with more limited time these days compared to the past.

I do love MK11. My only issue with these fighting games is that if I go weeks without playing, I forget what to do.

I can think of DLC models I do have issues with. I just don't see what is the issue with how most FGs are handling it today. Feel free to provide what makes it bad though as I'm open to the idea given how much I've opposed cash grab stuff in the past.
