Electronic Arts reached an agreement on Monday to buy U.K. racing game developer Codemasters in a deal worth $1.2 billion.
The deal upstaged a previous transaction agreed between rival publisher Take-Two Interactive and Codemasters. The firm had agreed to acquire Codemasters for £726 million ($971 million) only last month.
“The Codemasters Board has considered various aspects of the EA Offer and considers the EA Offer to represent a superior offer for Codemasters’ shareholders as compared with the Take-Two Offer,” the British firm said in a release.
EA said Codemasters’ shareholders would receive £6.04 in cash for each ordinary share of Codemasters. The deal is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2021, EA added.
The acquisition of Codemasters marks the biggest deal in EA’s history, and comes amid increasing consolidation in the video game industry as the coronavirus pandemic has accelerated demand for gaming.

On one hand, Codemasters is pretty much the only dev I can think of (outside of the people that make Forza and GT) who regularly push out racing games that aren't straight up sims, so RIP to the racing game genre.
On the other hand, I'm sure EA wants a piece of the F1 pie and to a certain extent WRC. I would also say that maybe some combination of Slightly Mad and Codemasters can work on the NFS franchise going forward. Ghost Games proved too incompetent, and I doubt gutted, modern day Criterion will do much better.

I miss the PS2 days when EA was great at making sports games and had a nice selection of sports games to choose from.

I miss the Genesis days when EA was publishing shite left and right that was occasionally very playable.
King’s Bounty, the precursor to Heroes Of Might And Magic, for the win.

Those Genesis days were terrific times for EA. The Bulls vs ____ and the NBA Playoffs games were great. Also loved playing Desert Strike, Jungle Stike, etc.
