EA has confirmed that there will be no new Battlefield game launching next year, with the franchise instead due to make its return in fiscal year 2022.

Battlefield 5, developer DICE's most recent series entry, released a little under a year ago - and with no new instalment in 2019, fans have wondered whether 2020 might see its return.

However, during its Q2 Fiscal 2020 Earnings Call this evening, EA confirmed (as noted by Niko Partners' games industry analyst Daniel Ahmad) that it won't be releasing a new Battlefield experience until its 2022 fiscal year. That means the game could arrive anywhere between April 2021 and the end of March 2022.

In Battlefield's absence, developer Respawn Entertainment's Apex Legends will serve as EA's primary shooter, with the publisher planning to expand the popular free-to-play battle royale game - which, it said, has seen over 70 million players since its launch earlier this year - out onto mobile and other platforms beyond PC, Xbox One, and PS4.

It also hopes to establish the game in China and in the e-sports scene.

Really chaps my arse.

I'll just say it.........frick battle royale. It's consumed the shooter market in a gross way now. I like that Respawn put a quality product out and people seem to like it, but potentially waiting another 2 1/2 years for what will HOPEFULLY be a modern Battlefield game is brutal. BF1 was ok, but they misjudged the market with another period shooter and from what I can gather, it's as dead as dead can be.

I played some BF4 last night. Still really good.

Hate this.

I played some BF5 the last few nights, still the best gunplay of the series.

Staying away from the yearly release cycle is much better for Battlefield. Every couple of years is best, especially if it's Bad Company 3 as leaked.

Battlefield: Bad Company 3 coming to next-gen consoles

This just confirms they will likely come out with the Eastern front and D-Day for Battlefield V.

If they could do Vietnam in the exact same style of longer range, slower paced battles, I'd buy.

But I certainly don't need another run around shooter game like COD

Bad company 2 is still probably by favorite fps It felt so good laying mines running ump 45 and seeing kills pop up. I will admit as a sniper to planting c4 all around flags and then waiting for players to almost cap the flag then blowing them up ans shooting stragglers lol. BF4 was good too.
