This is way above my skill set, but my Sega dreamcast stopped working and I took it to a console repair shop and he said he can't get parts anymore.

Should i try to buy an old dreamcast and swap parts? He talked about upgrading the unit and putting games on a memory card, but I don't know anything about that.

Yes, im old

most of the parts on ebay are for the Japanese version of the dreamcast. Most haven't been tested and buying a used laser assembly is a crap shoot and they are not cheap

Yeah unfortunately the GD-ROM drive can fail and because it’s proprietary there are no parts you can get without another Dreamcast. The Dreamcast uses gigabyte discs, which is a disc format that was exclusively made for the Dreamcast.

There are modders out there that will fix it for you depending on what you want to do. You can either replace the drive with another one, or get something like the the MODE or GDEMU that uses an SD card and plays your games off that. The latter may be better because eventually that disc drive is going to die again. The MODE and GDEMU SD card mod are basically permanent solutions, but it requires installation. Here's some solutions from RetroRGB: https://retrorgb.com/dreamcastode.html

IFixRetro is one of the best modders out there. He's based in NYC. You can email him. He does fantastic work. He's on twitter and facebook as well if you need to ask questions.
