Just started playing III on the switch and am a huge fan so far. Not a series I played growing up, for unknown reasons. What would be your other recommended entries? Def planning on playing XI at some point, but would like to ‘work my way up’ to that

I had never really heard of the series until I saw Dragon Quest Builders 2. I found out Akira Toriyama designed the characters and me being a huge Dragonball fan I decided to pick it up. Hands down one of the most addicting games I’ve ever played and it isn’t even a mainline title.
I picked up XI and have been playing it and it’s an absolute blast. One of the best games I’ve played the last decade. I plan on picking up 3 and the others once I’m done. If I had known about this series growing up it would most likely be my favorite video game series

I remember reading his author notes back in the old Dragon Ball manga volumes and he would mention how much he loved Dragon Quest. I think once Dragon Ball got big the Dragon Quest devs reached out to him to see if he wanted to do the character designs so the games have used his style for a long time now.

DQVII is a good one. But prepare yourself for a long game with that one.

VIII - amazing voice work. Great story.
It's also available on mobile (IOS), but minus the voice acting.

Dragon Quest 1 on Switch is a quick playthrough. I'd recommend it if you wanted to see how JRPGs got their start.
Skip 2.
The mobile ports of 4, 5, and 6 are all fantastic. In particular, I recommend Dragon Quest 5. I actually played through the SNES version on a translated ROM.
8 is really good, although I feel 11 eclipses it in every way. The problem with 8 too is that the mobile port is garbage, and the other other way to play would be PS2 or 3DS. Physical copy of the 3DS version is pretty expensive. Might can get that game digitally though.
In short, I recommend:
1, 5, 8, and 11.

3, 5, and 8 are the all round best games.
The new one 11 is also quite good.
None of them are bad although 7 comes closest IMO (way too long and kinda dull story)
