Been looking at these two in the Steam sale and can't decide on which one to pull the trigger on.

I own the first POE and loved the story, world, and characters of it. I was never enthralled with the gameplay though. While it never took away from the experience, it stood out to me during repeated playthroughs.

Meanwhile, I've heard almost overwhelmingly positive support for Divinity: Original Sin 2. Is it a markedly different or superior experience? Do I need to play the first one to know the world and story?

I love story-rich RPGs like this, so if I'm overlooking any other titles, please let me know!

Any advice is appreciated! TIA

PoE2 was ok, but didn't like it as much as the first one they blew away their goals on kickstarter and what they delivered was underwhelming, I could never get into Divinity for some reason, but I seem to be in the minority on it.

You don’t need to have played divinity os 1 in order to play 2, but both are amazing games so you should.

Only played POE 1 so far, so cant help there.

played divinity 1 and poe 1 but had much more fun with Divinity. the combat is a lot better, plus i prefer the true turn-based combat.

also felt like i had a lot more choices as far as building/gearing up characters

DoS2 is pretty much everything I love about turn based rpgs, so I'm going to recommend it first. PoE2 is fun though, combat isn't as tedious at it was in the first one.
