I was actually confused on this too. When I got that downed aircraft quest I was wondering where the hell the jungle was.
Act 2 is in the city of Moresby (where I currently am) and as I understand it, Act 3 is in the jungle. So you have to wait till then. You advance through each acts by doing the story missions. You can return to all previous fast travel locations though. So don't worry if you haven't completed every side quest before moving on to a different act/location.
Being the completionist that I am, it is really bothering me that I have a quest that I cannot complete, and the quest listing is just sitting there staring me in the face.

I scoured the resort looking for "the jungle".
the game never really implied that you couldn't do the fricker for another 15 hours when they dished out that plane crash quest.

I am playing by myself and I gotta say that the difficulty level goes up quite a bit when you hit Act 2. I die quite a bit while just trying to get from place to place while walking through the city.
My biggest advice would be to not get too attached to your weapons and also do whatever you can to not use your weapons unless you have to. I am spending $1000+ to repair each one now that they are upgraded and modded.
ETA:
To add to that I just figured out at the beginning of Act 2 that when you die you lose a percentage of your money.

How does the online work? I am currently a level 8 (I know not far, but still) will I have to start all the way over when my friend buys the game today in order to play with him?

you don't have to be the same level to play with one another.
zombies are levelled to coincide with hosts level, s o it may take him a minute to catch up. so long as you don't gain another ten levels or so, he should be able to work his way through it. need to have your characters within a reasonable range of levels.

Yesterday I was playing and I quit to go do something. When I came back my progress was saved then I played for another hour or so. After that if didnt save my progress. Anyone know why this could have happened? I was playing multiplayer LAN for some reason instead of single player. Then I switched to multiplayer online for the last hour i played, but I was still playing by myself. When I got back on today it left off where I was the first time I quit. Anyone know why?

Are you playing the PC Version because it is very buggy. I had this happen to me a few times that's why I quit when I hit a checkpoint which is around finishing a mission.

to answer whoevers question it was about playing at different levels.
i was a level 8 and Anti was a level 19. I joined him and it wasn't that bad. I died a few times, but i was getting massive amounts of XP from killing the zombies i could kill.
i went from 8-12 in an hour. and now have a nice little revolver that deals out 250+ damage a shot.

....yes some fricking zombie was shooting me with it. i killed him and took it. upgraded it all the way and it's a nice lil sidearm to have case things get out of control. i'm seen some videos of a chick toting what looked like a ak74u too.
i would imagine ammo is a beast to find on this game tho.
should get interesting with all the mod's laying around plus guns. i picked up a toxic mod, but haven't found the ingredients for it.
anti was toting some crowbar with a metal plate mod dealing out 300+ damage each swing.

I have a burst rifle and a short barrelled shotgun. There is not much ammo lying around for either, especially the shotgun.
It is pretty satisfying to nail a guy in the head with the pistol.
As far as melee weapons go...I have a electrified machete fully upgraded laying out 450 damage a shot. Its the tits.
Has anyone found any of the colored skulls yet? I have found the brown skull and the orange skull. I then found a little shrine where the orange skull goes...placed it and then got what's called a developers craft mod or something like that appeared. It takes 5 things of diamonds to create which are very rare. I can't remember what the mod actually does, but it had to be amazing.
