I asked this on the M/TV board but will ask you nerds as well, do any of you have Uverse. Mrs. Prytania would like to switch but I don't know enough about it to make a decision. Is ATT interwebz just as fast or slower?

I have U-Verse, got in May. Literally called customer service tonight to have a technician out tomorrow because it keeps freezing. Froze all day Saturday, came back on saturday night. Froze again all day Sunday, came back on sunday night. Got home from work at 6:00 and it was frozen and came back on around 11:00. It will freeze occasionally for about five minutes, but this is the second time I have experienced prolonged problems. If they do not fix it I'm going back to DirecTV.

I know a probably ten people with U'verse and 3 of us have freezing problems everyone else it works perfectly.

When it works it is wonderful which is the only reason I'm giving them so many chances to get it resolved.

My U-Verse internet was being spotty and causing freezing/framerate issues on XBL today, but after restarting everything, it seems to be fine. Up until today, I had never had a problem with it though. Had their internet since August or so.

On a related note, does your UVerse box always have to be plugged into the ethernet jack in order for it to work?

My apartment came pre-wired for UVerse, but I also like to hardwire my PS3. This could be a mega pain in the arse, especially if I'm trying to DVR stuff.

Yes, but get an Ethernet powerline extender and you can still hardwire it

I have this D-Link switch which handles Netflix, XBox and a Wii through it with no problems.

I had U-Verse and loved it for about 6 months. Then the gateway which powers both the TV and internet went out. The technician came out to replace it, and it worked for no more than a week before going out again. After the 4th technician came out and the 4th gateway replaced, they still could not get to the bottom of what was going on. I had to cancel it, and I went back to comcast.
It sucks too, because it was great when it worked.

I have U-Verse in Houston.

Granted I live a block away from a fiber line running into downtown houston, so my connection is really strong.

I haven't had Cox in a while as I haven't lived in South Louisiana in 7 years.

But I love my U-Verse.
- The guide doesn't freeze up.
- You can change the channelse without that 1 second freeze in between channels.
- The guide doesn't look like it's from the 1980's.
- Customer Service is fairly good. Better than my options around here. Typically if I have a problem 1 day, I call the morning of the 2nd and they are fixing it that afternoon.
- My 12mb connection is sick. I hardly see the lag my xbox friends do and I typically pull host. I'm not sure if you're a gamer but this is huge.

But if you love the Hornets, LSU, Saints....it's hard to switch from Cox due to Cox Sports.

I have U-Verse and I love it. I initially had a problem where the TV service would stop working 3 - 4 times per day, I'd have to reboot everything to get it working. I finally called and they troubleshot my equipment some, then sent someone out and they were out the next day and never have had any problems since. All they did was disconnect the coax connection to my STBs (set-top boxes, cable boxes) and put in ethernet.. completely cleared it up.

I have the U-200 and 18 Mbps internet, $140/month. But it dropped my AT&T cell phone bill in half, literally from $100/month to $50/month, so it came out to be really cheap in the end. I have had no real problems with customer service. They're always nice, friendly, and helpful. Though, I did have phone service installed later and they tried to hit me with a $149 installation fee for a tech to come out and take 10 minutes to program the residential gateway.. I was never told of any charges and I even asked and was told there shouldn't be a charge. So I called their customer service and with no hassle at all, they issued me a credit for the $149.

The picture quality is phenomenal. My roommate just bought a 46" Samsung 6300 series LED tv, and the picture is jaw-dropping at times. Even before that TV, the picture quality is just fantastic. There is a bit of tiling every once in a blue moon, but I'm not much of a stickler for that. One thing that does irritate the crap out of me is how slow to respond the STB can be. We're about to roll out IPTV (which is what uverse is) here at work with a newer generation of Cisco STBs, and the menus are super responsive, quick, snappy. The U-verse STBs processors are slower, it's a slower machine in general, so it's a little slow. Not intolerable but they could stand an upgrade.

The internet is great as well. I never lag online, NEVER. Even when my roommate is downloading something. The default SSID and code to log on are a pain but I just logged into the gateway and changed them.

Overall I'm a very satisfied customer. My next roommates that I'm moving in with in July want to go with Cox instead and it makes me sad :(

ATT has recently been running new fiber optics around the neighborhood and my wife is buying into it. I guess I'll give it a try and see if I like it. Thanks for all the inout.

AT&T U-Verse is DSL based. So by definition the closer your home is to the fiber line the better the DSL will work.

As I was saying. I am less than a block from a major fiber optic line running thru Houston, so my connection is blazing.

This may apply for you as well if what you're wife is indicating is true.

It's not really offered anywhere outside of major cities at this point. Most of BR, I think NO, Houston, etc, all will have Uverse available, and it will be fast. But that's cool that you live that close to a major trunk.

The company I work for offers a FTTH, fiber to the home, network. Fiber optic cable runs from our head end, in a trunk, to a Central Office, then fiber runs from there to pedestals, and from pedestals it's fiber to the ONT on the house.. The network is amazingly fast. Internet speeds are the same at a home as they are at the COs and at the Head End. Which is why we're about to roll out IPTV..

Yeh, i've had it in Houston for almost 2 years.

Appears to just now to be spreading throughout BR. My parents had AT&T DSL, but it was completely different than U-Verse.

I pretty much make a living off of referals for U-Verse. I get $100 ATM card everytime I refer someone and then I call my AT&T rep and she hooks me up with 6 more months of HBO, Starz, Cinemax depending on which one I'm running low on. Haven't paid for HBO or Starz in 2 years. This is just kind of a hookup i have for being really polite and flirting with my AT&T rep.

If anyone reads this later down the road. You can signup to have AT&T U-Verse send you an email when the service is available in your area.

All I know is I have been barely getting over 1mb for the past couple of nights with Cox. I wish I had time to write them an angry letter.

Yeah a friend of mine's Cox service is so unstable. Granted he lives in a frat house, but sometimes, even if he's there by himself, it's extremely slow, or it drops in and out. They've had multiple Cox guys go out and check everything, said everything's fine. I went over there (I work tech support for a local ISP) and looked at his modem, when it's dropping out the modem is rebooting. I told him to tell them to replace the modem, but every time they go, it doesn't drop out so they won't replace the modem. Freaking stupid.

In your case Lew, I would suggest picking up a signal booster from WalMarks or Best Buy.

Plug it up, try it for a night or two to see if it makes any difference, if not return it. I know Rob got one and it has helped his connection out greatly.

I was thinking about that but then I thought about Schwartz'ing them into getting some free HBO or something.
