Buying movies throught Xbox Video is a fricking terrible idea

Get this,
I come home today wanting to watch Prometheus, which I bought at full price. I locate it on xbox video, press play, and a message pops up telling me that there is some problem with licensing.
so I look up whats going on and apparently when you buy digital movies, you are not buying unlimited access to the movie, you are buying access for as long as the provider has the rights agreement with the movie company.
This is just one way that the digital age is straight up fricking us. I paid as much as a Blu-ray, I should have just bought that instead.
I checked the rest of my movies and two others are down too. This fricking pisses me off and I feel like raging right now
and I don't give a frick if you think I deserve this bc you think Prometheus sucks.

Prometheus sucks.
That sucks though. No way you can get your money back?

nope apparently this is explained in a usage rights page off to the side of the main screen before purchase. But why the frick would I look at that when im fricking purchasing something

This is one of the main issues that I and many others have with purely digital media.

I haven't heard about this. Maybe they wanted to try and save you from watching that garbage?
Posted on 7/17/13 at 9:37 pm to Scruffy
But Scruffy, surely if the games were digital it wouldn't happen this way huh? I mean I've never had an MP3 revoked from me after purchase before.

It might if you buy it through xbox.
Btw I don't see anything about this with vudu or ultraviolet.
looks like Ill stick with that or torrent from now on.

Games are different, buying it digitally is the same as the hard copy.
Movies, not so much.
Movies, not so much.

I don't think that games go through temporary licenses like movie deals.

That's what I thought hog.

I need to check mine then. Have you downloaded them to the harddrive and still have the problem or just stream?
Posted on 7/17/13 at 9:56 pm to Puck82
Yep I downloaded prometheus and can't play it. Though they say if you download it you can access it, doesn't work for me though

Meh. You could do much worse than Prometheus. It's better than Alien 3 and it's a hell of a lot better than the abortion that is Alien Resurrection.
But yeah, that sucks. I suppose I knew in theory that could happen, but I hadn't heard of it affecting movies purchased in the Xbox video store.
I don't see what these studios think they are accomplishing, though. Let's say I'm Mr. Alexman and I'm still dead set on watching Prometheus. What? They think I'm going to go buy another copy now? Of course not. Piratebay here I come...and while I'm browsing maybe I'll just go ahead and download the entire Alien franchise too.
Make your films easy to purchase and watch at a reasonable price and I'll gladly pay for them.

I rent movies all the time from Xbox, and I never pay over $5.

I buy my media on Amazon and stream it on my Xbox.

They are subject to the same digital use licensing as Xbox. Everyone that streams new releases is.
It's all done to give HBO, Cinemax, Starz, etc. an exclusive time period for streaming the videos once they are no longer on pay per view or whatever.
After that time period is over you are free to watch it anytime you want and should never have to deal with exclusive period like that again.
It is very stupid and another reason why movies are the most torrented form of media there is.
The music industry wised up and sort of saved themselves. iTunes showed them the way and they have embraced it. Gaming made their digital products cheaper and more easily accessible which lead to less piracy and this is owed to Steam mostly. Even with other forms of digital media showing them how it should be done, the movie and television industry are still fricking up the way they handle their digital distribution. They do this despite evidence showing people would not pirate as much if their product was more accessible by legit means.
They just don't get it.

does ultraviolet have to deal with the same licensing? Vudu has Prometheus and X-men: First Class available right now.
Posted on 7/18/13 at 10:29 am to alexman
Everyone has different deals with different studios depending on the content. It's not the same across the board which is another reason it's just plain stupid.

This makes sense, but I meant to say that I have never had that issue with Amazon and some of my purchases are a few years old and I can still watch them.
