Yep, you've seen it a ton in the movie industry as well as in the video game industry.

They make a product with some very hacky and obvious "social justice" stuff shoehorned in and they expect everyone to pat them on the backs and praise them but when they actual consumers object, they don't know what to do and just lash out at their own customers and more often than not the product bombs.

I blame the echo chamber effect. They honestly don't understand that the entire world doesn't necessarily 100% share their political point of view so they aren't prepared for pushback and then freak out.

The other reason is because they refuse to accept that the primary audience for video games is still straight young males who are mostly apolitical or libertarian in nature, and who hate political correctness.

They instead pander to people who don't even buy their products. How many women's study majors do they think are gonna pick up Battlefield V?

Yeah, but quite literally the only "social justice" issue people had a problem with was a woman playable character. If just that falls under your brush of SJW labeling, God help you.

Then we went the realism route because the woman argument didn't hold water.

this subreddit sums up that subculture of keyboard warrios quite nicely

The number of women fighting in combat in WW2 was so utterly minuscule compared to men that making an entire game showcasing a woman on the front lines is def. a political/social statement.

One doesn't need to pick between calling them SJW's or unrealistic, they are doing both simultaneously.

The idea that any sizable portion of "toxic" male gamers hate women characters has always absurd. I don't remember a single person ever complaining about Samus or Lara Croft or whoever, because those characters came about organically. But when it's clear they are shoehorning in female characters solely for the purpose of virtue signalling that's when people complain and that's when the left wing press starts repeating that narrative.

Wonder what the WW2 vets would think of this game. I mean is it so hard to honor what they did and not be offended by it because errrmmaageerddd no women in game?

And what statement would that be? Women are OK? The horror!!!

And she's 1 character in a group of 4, I think the co-op part of the game. How is that showcasing her?

Forced inclusion for an actual event and the fictional world of pandora aren’t even remotely the same thing.

How important was historical accuracy with the Wolfenstein games?

Back to Battlefield, I still don't get the historical accuracy argument. When I think "accuracy" with Battlefield games, I think weapon and vehicle mechanics, bullet drop, not story components. They're all uber fictionalized, and honestly, nobody every plays the campaigns anyway.

Wolfenstein =. Alternate history/ extreme exaggeration of events. That last one tried a little too hard to be woke, as well.

Battlefield was initially an arcade styled simulation of warfare. The first few iterations tried to keep in line with the conflict they focused upon if it was an actual historical conflict, barring some of the wackier expansions that focused on experimental military equipment.

And I didn’t find the newer take intimidating. Just stupid. Once they told me to frick off for thinking as such, I resolved not to buy the game. So it goes.

The outcry was so insanely loud, were you really surprised that the backlash was strong? I was kind of shocked they said it that way, but it was funny to see someone smack the gaming community on the nose over something they felt was absolutely over the top.

Exaclty. I'm actually very much on the fence about it, but as I've stated many times, it's more to do with not feeling another old theater of war. Unless it's out of this world awesome, I would more than likely never touch any campaign or co-op stuff, just stick to MP and whatever their BR mode would be.

Battlefield presales way under expectations

It's a mix. I'm serious when I say the general pulse out there was everyone was hoping for something more along the lines of BF3 or 4. Buzz just isn't the same around a BF game. There is some impact of people upset about "virtue signaling", but I seriously doubt it's that significant.

The obvious big factor is how poinsoned the EA name has become over the last couple of years. I know they own DICE and it would be next to impossible for this to happen, but it would be great for the Battlefield series to escape the dark shadow of EA.

And what would delaying the release date a month do to quell concerns over a playable character? They won't remove her..............although that would be insane and a total EA move.

Did you guys see the story about a song they licensced for the latest Madden that had a reference to Kapernick in it? So since he's out of the league and is suing the NFL, they had no control over his likeness so obviously he wasn't going to show up in the game. So that song gets put in, and for some reason, the message got muddled and someone decided to bleep out his name in the song like it was a cuss word. It was in review copies and people were losing their minds over how dumb of a move that was. I think EA ended up patching out the song, but just another black eye.
