Bingo.

Microsoft Could “Exit the Gaming Business” Without Enough Growth for Game Pass by 2027, as Per Phil Spencer

i read that as they'd abandon console gaming which doesn't necessarily mean leaving the industry entirely.

Seems unlikely since they just bought one of the biggest game studios. Shutting down X box would lose a huge customer segment.

You're right, it's 10 million total including Game pass

IGN

Still, me being wrong on that hurts your argument because it essentially highlights how successful Game pass can be

quote:

The fact that Bethesda's latest title is enjoying massive sales should come as no surprise, not least because Starfield already became a big hit on Steam before it even released. Its day-one Xbox Game Pass debut also contributed to its success, pushing it to six million players two days into its September 6 release. Starfield hence boasts the title of the biggest launch in Bethesda's history by a decent margin.

quote:

Starfield's very presence on Xbox Game Pass likely lowered its sales, which are the only metrics tracked by the GSD.

On the other hand, the game's five-day early access period offset some of those losses, as the newly published chart also includes its pre-September 6 sales, making its launch week ten days long. And while Xbox Game Pass likely cannibalized Starfield's week-one sales to a greater extent than its two-part release helped prop them up, the early access period must have helped mitigate the impact of the RPG's immediate addition to Microsoft's subscription service nonetheless.

quote:

Microsoft, the owner of Bethesda parent ZeniMax Media, is unlikely to be bothered with that state of affairs. On the contrary, the tech giant has long insisted that direct sales are merely one of its avenues for reaching customers, while repeatedly labeling Xbox Game Pass as its flagship gaming offering. And while the full impact of Bethesda's latest hit has yet to be determined, some industry watchers believe that the Starfield effect has already been hugely beneficial to Xbox sales.

It's a great rental service especially as games are $70 now.

Back in the day you'd have to spend $7 to rent a game for a week from the store, now you can pay $15 for a full month.

That's the best part of those types of services.

I'll buy a month of Ubi+ to rent and beat the new AC.

Exclusives ain't going nowhere. All Sony did was make a lot of great ones, forcing Microsoft to buy them off the shelf.

Gamepass is a losing model, you should hope that ES6 even releases.

It's really fascinating how many people convince themselves that it's perfectly viable as is. You simply can't sustain that many first-party AAA games with so few people actually buying them. It's pretty obviously a case of losing money short-term to try to gain market share long-term.

10 million players. Not 10 million sales.

is that why Sony copied it?

They haven't put a single first party AAA game on that service on release.

The major film studios have been putting their movies on subscription services for about four decades now. But they have never come to the conclusion that it's a good idea to do it at release. It happens once actual ticket sales and purchases are effectively exhausted.

You should read the whole thread before coming in and spouting off talking points that have already been disproven in the thread.

I'd like to see how many Game Pass players paid the $30 for the early access/first story expansion. I definitely did.

Console gaming will eventually die out entirely. PC gaming is getting better yearly while console gaming is stuck in the same form for 5-7 years at a time.

Look at what's happening in the PC gaming space. Prices have shot up into the stratosphere for PC components. Top GPU manufacturers AMD and Nvidia flirting with the idea of abandoning gaming in favor of AI. Virtually no optimization being done for PC ports of video games.

It's far more likely that PC gaming ceases to exist at least in its current form before consoles.

As I've said before, ultimately the end goal is for all games to essentially be a service you pay x dollars a month to access. Everything is streamed directly to your device, and access to your library can be revoked at any time.

You think that proves anything when we're talking about a game with a reported budget of 400 fricking million dollars???

GamePass eats sales. Bigly. If it didn't, you wouldn't hear it so many of it subscribers talk about what a great deal it is. You don't say something is a great deal if you plan on buying the games at full price anyway.
