re: Anyone picking up Black Myth Wukong? Haven’t seen any chatter here for it

There’s a hogwarts legacy lite situation happening with this game. IGN and other outlets reviews are so woke and fake moral grandstanding people are buying it out of spite

Yesterday a Chinese leak showed an IGN review for the game and identified Rebecca Valentine as the author.
The official review was different, but I’m not convinced the leak was actually bogus.
Last year the game was just another indie development, but within days of another Chinese leak about Game Sciences refusal to engage a consultant who wanted to help westernize the story, a slew of sites began publishing coordinated stories about sexist behavior from the developers.

Yeah that’s the story where they claimed SBI attempted to black mail them right? Not sure if it’s true as i obviously wasn’t there but wouldn’t shock me at all given Kim Bellars public comments, and there were a suspicious amount of all timed together articles mostly by IGN and Game informer grasping at straws to drum up some hate. Like anyone cares what they think. You’d think hogwarts legacy would’ve been a lesson.

So the game is anti woke? I’m in

I don’t believe it’s actually anti woke. It just simply isn’t going through the normal humiliation ritual of showing the mob your game is post modern approved TM. It seems they just made the game they wanted to make regardless of current year. Which is what we should all want to get back to

That’s the real irony…it’s a game about a monkey based on Chinese lore.
But, if every recent AAA game is a gauge, someone got pissed that the protagonist isn’t swapped midway through the story for a girl boss monkey.

Quick example of the hogwarts legacy effect I spoke of earlier;
Game is number 1 on steam wishlist with an exact total of 623,973 which is more than 2-10 combined.
Some notable examples on there and the numbers include Silk song at 2 206,424 Monster Hunter Wilds at 6 with 106,079 and marvel rivals at 7 with about the same as monster hunter

Enough for me

This situation is getting pretty crazy. I’m not going to claim it’s anywhere near as big as the sells bump legacy got from the freaks because that’s Harry Potter but ever since IGN specifically and the Gamer (go read them and it’ll be clear why) put out their “reviews” sales have been absolutely exploding across all areas where we can see such data. And trust me that’s not the effect those two reviews hoped for

Non politically motivated hit piece reviews from people actually worth considering as serious people are starting to get around. There’s an extremely strong consensus that is near unanimous to all of it and it’s 3 things in the good column and 3 in the bad
Good:
The games combat is extremely fluid and fun to play. It has a very unique upgrading path that’s pretty much as close a possible to something fresh and unique in 2024. For some people this might be a good or bad but the game utilizes a souls like formula meaning bonfire checkpoints and the like, but is on the far easier end of the spectrum than almost any other same type
The game is absolutely beautiful beautiful and it’s production value is off the charts
The game makes very good use of its narrative story and mythological roots to create engaging and synergistic gameplay
Bad
Performance is not very good. This can be and likely will be fixed eventually via patch and it’s not clear how much this relates to the ps5 version but pc players expect rough performance
The game doesn’t do enough with its high potential story beat where your character gains different “forms” (idk I’m not familiar with the actual mythology and what this means really) and incorporating that into gameplay
The level design is very often extremely basic with brief and limited gameplay segments where it opens up and becomes very good

I read the review and I have no idea what you are talking about.

As a rule, reviewers could not care less whether you buy a game; they care about how much people engage with their article.

I agree they primarily rage bait for engagement clicks, but if you’re denying they for some random reason decided to stake the flag into this being another culture war battle idk why. It’s reality. And they don’t want to lose like they did with legacy

Did you read Rebecca Valentines article? It’s possible they punished multiple. Sometimes they’ll do that and pull the ole motte and Bailey technique to fall back on a measured take they put out

Can you post a link to one or two articles you find most offensive?

IGN can’t get out of its own way. When you open an article titled: Black Myth: Wukong Global Release Times Confirmed…you don’t expect to read:
Today, IGN verified an email sent from the Black Myth: Wukong marketing team that told content creators granted a Steam key that they must not include “feminist propaganda” or use what are called “trigger words” such as COVID-19 in their coverage.
WTF?

I’m confused: are you saying that a game dev putting out ultimatums to get review keys isn’t newsworthy?
