Advice for a gaming console

I don't play video games and I'm don't know much about gaming.
I am looking to purchase gaming system for a kid who is 8 years old. He lives in a small town in Lebanon with minimal or no internet connection; so he won't be using it for online play.
He never owned a console before and ideally would like to get him bunch of games with the console.
I am looking at spending around 250$ for the total package.
Any recommendation on a console and games in that price range?
I am thinking of looking at Xbox360 or something similar.
Thanks in advance!

I would skip the 360 at this point, I would snag a PS4 slim or Xbox One S instead.

I thought 360 is cheaper and i would be able to get him a bunch of games with his console for cheap! not a good idea?
Also, is it possible to get old games for cheap without spending 50$ on new games?

It's cheaper but 13 years old at this point, ancient in terms of tech. If your trying to be cost effective get him a 2DS, much more games for his age. For a console get him a PS4 or Xbox One it will go a lot longer and both are in your price range.

If he has never had a console, won't be using it for online play and won't be playing with many friends, then with your budget a Nintendo Wii U would be ideal for an 8 year old. Buy him a ton of Mario games and some of the Legend of Zelda games. That should keep you under the $250 budget

Yea get him the Wii U. Be sure and get him a pro controller for it tho if it's in your budget.

I researched Wii and they don't make this console new anymore?
Looks like they are all used with a wide price range!!

Switch doesn’t require much online activity plus it is portable. My son plays a lot off line.

Can you even play an Xbox One without internet? I thought you have to get it set up

Obligatory switch recommendation to pacify the Nintentards.

Only a narrow minded person would suggest something else.

Amazon has a minecraft One S bundle for 199
Keep in mind you'd have to open it and update somewhere with internet and download the game somewhere with internet
Rare Replay for Xbox. Has a ton of old remsatered games for only 20 bucks.
The One is also backwards compatible so you can go to gamestop and grab some cheap 360 games for him to play it with. Keep in mind to make sure they are backwards compatible first before buying them as only some games are.
List of backwards compatible HERE

Thanks
So I'd need to update the console itself before being able to use it.
I'm not sure if they have net there? If they don't, then Xbox one would be unplayable?
Or maybe I can update it in the US before sending it to him!

You can play the Xbox without internet but the initial setup needs internet. So if you got it you'd have to set it up yourself and get everything started and downloaded. Then once it's all set up and everything it should be able to be played without internet

I still think Nintendo would be a better fit for this situation though.
