I got to play for about 5 minutes during the stress test and had no idea what I was doing. I was just clicking buttons.

Is there a better tutorial that I didn't get to yet or is it up to me to basically figure out how to do the basics?

Yeah they don't do a good job at tutorials.

How familiar are you with computer games/mmos?

I mean, it's standard stuff, WASD walking, right clicking to initiate talking to an NPC.

There is no basic or auto-attack. All combat is based on your skills 1-0.

EQ, WoW, Star Wars Galaxies, DC Universe Online are all MMO's I have played. I didn't have enough time to see if its auto key spamming or mouse clicking during combat. Like I said I had about 5 minutes of time in game.

Pre-Purchase with 3-Day Headstart: Everyone who pre-purchased Guild Wars 2 will enjoy three full days of Headstart Access. The three-day Headstart Access will officially begin at 0:00 AM Pacific time (GMT -7:00) on 25 August. However, please note that in order to ensure that we’re fully prepared for that fateful hour we may bring servers online up to 3 hours prior. If you’re a player committed to getting in first to grab that character name of your dreams you’ll want to be keeping an eye on things during that time period.

Someone convince me not to buy this damn game
I just started Skyrim after buying it on the steam summer sale. I have a buddy up my arse to play The Secret World...I have a new Zelda game on the wii that I'm all of 5 hours in to. I have way too many unplayed games to pick this up, but it's getting really hard to contain myself now that release is coming up soon.

Go download GW1 from NcSoft and see if you even like the Guild Wars.

GW1 and GW2 aren't the same game yes, but at less play around with GW1 and see if you want to make the purchase.

I already played the beta for GW2. I know I'll like the game, that's part of the problem

After playing 10+ MMO's over the years the thing that stands out to me the most is the more relaxed feel. As in I can go participate in an event and if something comes up I can just walk away and still receive credit. Last night I played for about 20 minutes then my son woke up. I simply walked my character to a safe area on the map and came back to play 30 minutes later and still received credit for my participation in the event from earlier. The ability to go back and complete lower levels and still gain xp, do new events, and explore takes the "grinding" out of the game. Their is no more running of the same dungeon for countless hours to upgrade to premium gear. The points from the events are accumulated to buy gear no matter which level or zone you decide to play in.

Then their is WvWvW which is a whole new animal in itself. I loved that sort of combat in Warhammer and the original days of AV in WoW, where strategy was actually needed and it wasn't just zerging to kill the last boss before the other group does. Action comes from all directions and in many forms (escorts, defending and taking keeps, and epic battles in the middle of nowhere).

This game has tons of content and countless ways for someone to participate. A lot less linear than most MMO's.

you're supposed to be talking me OUT of buying this game

for real though, I'm like you...I have been gaming (specifically MMO's) for nearly 15 years now (/cry) the thing that really appeals to me about GW2 is it's the first non monthly payment MMO that I'll have played. my version of gaming in MMO's these last few games is always the same for me: Grind to top level, get bored because it's too easy to get to the end game and there is no end game content, realize that I'm bored and cancel my sub after 2 months.

With GW2 there is no longer that feeling of "I have to play for 20 hours a week to feel like it's worth spending money on it every month" and I really like the thought of that.

GW2 is awesome. You should play it.

Sorry, I'm just being honest.

That about sums up the reason I've played the majority of the major titles released in the last 10 years.

Those times were fun in college and my younger years, but with a family now I just want to relax and not feel rushed, or that I have to get to the top as fast as possible. Even for those that get to the top in the first few weeks it's fun to go back down and do the other zones without ruining the lowbies experience by blowing up all the events due to level and gear.

The one thing I don't like about their WASD is that you have to depress the right mouse button to control direction. Tera and others have it set up so the mouse can control direction without button pressing. Not a huge deal but something I don't like.

That's for the clickers who don't use the keys to attack.

Most MMOs I have played use Mouse 2 for camera movement. How does it work if simply moving the mouse moves the camera? Then you wouldn't be able to click on anything. That seems like a shitty interface.

I am by no means a combat clicker, but you have to use the cursor for some things... Like inventory management.

:kige:

It works for arena games, FPS's and what not, but not MMO's. At least not for me.

I don't know what would hold them back from having a "Mouse connected to cursor" interface switch for those who want it if it's that important.
