Today, the baby symbolizes luck and prosperity to whoever finds it in their slice of cake.

I was an out of state student from the Midwest that went to LSU, and I got the baby the first time I ever had king cake. I bit right into it, and completely oblivious to the tradition, shouted "Why the F is there a baby in my cake??"

Any association with the Christ child is incidental and was not his intent.

That may or may not be true in New Orleans, but using a fava bean or other small item in the cake to represent baby jesus goes back at least a couple hundred years in other countries.

Show me a source....yes, baking a lucky token inside of a cake (or a steamed pudding, or a loaf of bread) is a venerable tradition, but I've not found legitimate sources that associate the token as being a representation of the baby Jesus/Christ child.

The favor/lucky token may variously indicate luck for the coming year, or indicate which person is "king for a day" or rules over the gathering.

But token equaling baby Jesus? Again, old sources please...not contemporary assumptions/folklore.

So you can easily identify who has to purchase the next one.

The last piece of office king cake is avoided by all but the lone snack crazed employee. For it is known, the baby has secretly been moved again and again until it rest below the final slice.
