Preparing for the downvotes, but eggs are really cheap when you consider that they’re a high quality protein source with loads of applications in the kitchen. A dozen eggs is about 1.5 pounds of “meat.” Even $3.88 for a dozen is a great price.
Now, I like pasture raised eggs, and I’m paying $7.99 for a dozen. Priciest, but still cheaper than beef or fish.

I have unfortunately become an egg snob. The ones we buy are like $9 a dozen now. It's worth it to me though.
These are incredible

I don’t buy eggs super often, but I noticed at my local store the other day that the cheapest brand eggs were 1 to 2 bucks more per dozen than the brown organic and cage-free eggs. I was like what in the world is going on?

Ask your neighbor. Mine has 32 hens producing right now. $1.50 a dozen and they last forever. Was thinking about pickling and canning some some soon.

As many have said, avian flu has been a real bitch this year. The problem isn’t just that chickens are culled, it’s new USDA regs that result in remarkably long shutdowns afterward. This has really compressed the market.
One business I managed used bulk raw eggs and saw a 300% increase and super tight supply this year.
In the past, bird flu spikes cost and temporarily hurts supply, but we usually see quick recovery. The new regs make it much more difficult.
Fun fact: In 2015 a major bird flu wave hit, but many manufacturers relying on bulk eggs bridged the gap with eggs from Ukraine
