So I was just going through my pics from the bourbon trail and came across this one. They were bottling PVW20 when we were at Buffalo Trace. The bottling room smelled amazing. Too bad it wasn't the winter or else I would have been wearing a big jacket and could have snatched a few.

The 50/50, Pappy 15 and Pappy 20 blind taste is happening tonight.

Mrs. TA has agreed to administer it since she is a bottle of wine deep....thus ensuring accuracy...

Sounds like a fantastic night in your household TA! Let us know how it goes. I had my first pour of my 60/40 mix on Friday and it was very good.

I was a little disappointed in the PVW20 this past year. Still better than the 50/50 though.

I am sorry for the blurry image...Mrs. TA was well into a second bottle.

I was completely blind...we did 3 rounds.

1st Round:
I called the 15 the 50/50, the 50/50 the 20 and the 20 the 15.

2nd Round: (she remixed them and no words were spoken...I had some water too. So I re-sampled blind without hearing any round one results)
I called all three correctly. I called the 15 dry, alcohol on the nose and significant burn on the back end, but nice flavors in the middle. Next, I picked the 50/50 right saying it was caramel and harsh only at the end and smooth up front. Lastly, I picked the 20 saying it was honey and vanilla...very smooth and lingered.

On the third round, I called the order of ranking them by taste. Once again, it was blind and I was given no info on the first two rounds of results.

For me, they ranked 20, 50/50 and 15.

I agree my 20 this year is not as good as last year's allocation; however, it was still my favorite.

Not making excuses for the first round results, but I did have some Santa Barbara syrah before it. However, I went into round two fairly confident I got the first round correct. However, I felt much more confident and clearer delineation after the second round...though my guesses were different.

I submit an ice bucket style bourbon tasting challenge to anyone...choice of bourbons do not matter, only the results.

Advice: no syrahs before the tastings.

1PD: HazMat
2PD: EC 12 (that's 12 for now)

Thanks for the results

I'm not too surprised with how it turned out, and wine will mess with your tastebuds without a proper cleanse.

The 15 yr I find overrated (some will say the same about the 23 yr, though it was pure Stitzel-Weller up until 2013). I actually enjoyed the VW reserve rye better than the 15 in a taste test I did at APub a couple years ago.

15 packs the heat, but the 20 is divine. There's tons of vanilla in there in my experience, and as smooth as it gets. It's a shame the last batch was a bit underwhelming.

Bottom line, the 50/50 continues to be a stellar pour, especially for the price....and fairly accessible if you're willing to travel a bit.

And props to Unc for calling that ranking beforehand!

Damn...I had to scroll up to see his predictions...Unc was dead on.

15 is the hot commodity now, but the 20 is the first whiskey I ever loved back as a mere intern at an old law firm back in 2006...it remains one my taste buds love apparently. That rye though...

Van Winkle rye is maybe my favorite pour I have ever had..its been a year, but it wowed me. Even with some decent connections it was impossible to get another bottle this year...for me at least.

I'd put the JPS 17/18 as perhaps my favorite pour (nursing the hell out of it)...that and the 2011 PVW 23 yr and Hirsch 16 (from 1974)...but that VW rye has been damn good the last couple years.

Fortunately, APub has some reasonable prices when I feel like splurging for a pour...

Man it's late...got a lot of GOAT herding to do tomorrow

Any solid Liquor stores in Baton Rouge besides Cuban liquors and Martins Wine Cellar?

I know about Calandro's, but any other good Liquor only stores?

J, check out Marcellos and ambassador wine... Nothing special at either place right now though.

I've said it before but I repeat myself allot.. frick PHILLIPES. They sell their pappy 23 for $2300 and BTAC for $500+. Don't give those French fricks your $$.

Steve is good people at ambassador
