do you seasoned them first like cast iron? Ex:put a coat of oil and bake in oven for an hour then let cool a couple cycles?
Get them smoking hot and season them with an onion.
Just know that they will discolor and will never look new again.

I got one of these and just laid it, unlit at the bottom of my vertical smoker...

Of course Weber will say their pellets are best to use with their smoker, but it doesn't matter what brand you use.
To an extent. That being said there is some legitimate discussion about some brands having an overly inconsistent pellet size that allows for larger pellets that what the Smokefire is designed to manage through its hopper and augers system. One of the review sites went through some effort to collect reports of feed issues as well of a survey of all users and the brand pellets they use and there was a really strong correlation between certain pellet brands and feed issues. To be clear, there were plenty of feed issues with Weber pellets, but the percentage of feed issues with other brands was statistically higher.
The Weber pellets are not necessarily better than other additive free brands, but they are more of whatever particular size the Smokefire is designed around.
Disclaimer: I am not a Smokefire owner, but am looking at buying one with the spring sales.

I use the brand from Sam’s. Roughly $14 for a 40lb bag and they seem to burn just fine.
I’ve been using these for a while now and I like them. They burn clean without a lot of ash and seem to last longer. If I’m not mistaken they are hickory, cherry and oak.

I understand the technology has advanced in the last few years since this thread was started regarding the pellet smoker and pellet pressing. I am curious what y’all are using regarding using pellets and gadgets you can’t smoke without. I just got a new pellet smoker for Christmas.

Best $12 I've spent on a gadget
This thing puts out a lot of smoke and lasts about 6-7 hours when it's full. Someone else mentioned it in this thread but I wanted to share the link. Like they said, you can also use it for cold smoking..not running the grill at all, only using the smoking tube.
You'll need a little propane torch or something like that to light the pellets. I have this one.
