I have all of ONE beer in my fridge right now. Southern Tier Pumking. Gonna bust it out this weekend since it's been sitting in there since Christmas.

Damn. this thread is making me want to compile a beer fridge. Need to drop about $500 to get close to what you guys have. Then, my garage refrigerator from 1980 is not worthy. That'll be another $1000 for a new one.

Nah, Old fridges work fine and if not you can find them for $150 on craigslist.

Correct. And if they go out it's not like the beer is ruined like foods would be.

question about fridges dedicated to beer:

do you keep it as cold as a regular fridge to be able to drink the beer straight from it or keep it at a higher "cellaring" temp?

Mine is in a wine fridge so it's at a cellaring temp that I can drink from.

Between. I keep it around 45, aim more for the low end of optimal drinking temperature.

I guess that there wouldn't be anything wrong with keeping them colder than a true cellaring temp other than you might not get the same amount of changes that cellaring a beer can cause

right?

Most fridges are too cold when it comes to beer in my opinion. I like to pour mine and let it warm up a bit. Depending on style of course.

I was reading an article the other day that said keeping beer to cold such as Imperial Stouts could alter the taste in a poor way. I'll have to find it when I go home but it raised my eyebrow because I have some Pumpkin stouts sitting in there that I might have ruined.

I think that's the idea. Maybe around 55 for beers that might have a positive impact from cellaring.

yeah, I guess by "drink beer from it" I meant do you keep it down below 60 or 65, which would be a little high for drinking, for me

thats interesting

my beer "cellar" is in a box in the bottom, back corner of a closet closest to the interior of the house, where it stays pretty cool in the summer, so they are not kept cool enough, really. My dedicated beer fridge is in BR waiting for my next trip there, which will be Memorial Day weekend. At least by the time the hottest part of the summer hits and we keep our house a little warmer I will be able to store them properly. I am not sure if it will have settings that will keep it around 45, which would be great, or if I will have to buy a temp control unit

I have a bunch the same way... and a lot in the freezer/kegerator with a temperature controller. Hopefully all of mine will be fine, I think it really takes extreme temperatures or light exposure to damage the beer.
