I do this a lot. Add some salt and sometimes herbs.

Whatever we have we always have a stick on the counter. I grew up with a covered butter dish on the counter and have always done that. Soft butter is great to have handy.

Whatever is unsalted and looks decent. I hate cooking with salted butter...
