once you get to the water portion, you have no desire to ever ruin your bourbon with coke again.

this is true, when you go bakc to coke it seems so sweet and ruins the taste.

I agree with Zappa-I don't think Four Roses is the one to jump into drinking neat or on the rocks. Makers would be OK, Blanton's is another mild, smooth one. Save the Four Roses, George T. Stagg and the other ones that bite back for when he's ridden without training wheels for awhile.

Get you a high quality bourbon. And a Mason jar. Cram the mason jar full of ice and fill with high quality bourbon. Let sit for 3-4 minutes. Sip and enjoy.

Four Roses uses 10 different recipes and 2 proprietary yeast strains. What that means is that one bottle of Four Roses can be VERY different than another. The Small Batch is a mixture of 4 recipes so it's a little more mellowed out and not as different from bottle to bottle. The Single Barrel will be one recipes from one barrel so if it's one of the spicier mash bills it's gonna be a spicey bourbon. i've got probably 4 bottles of Four Roses at the house right now and each is very different.

Four Roses is my favorite but may not be the best for a beginner. Go get a bottle of Elmer T Lee. Under $30 and a damn fine whiskey to start with.

Just Do It
Glass
Ice
Pour Maker's over ice 1/3 up the ice
roll the glass around for a little while
sip
let ice melt some
sip

next thing you'll know it's time for a refill

if you want to transition, just do a splash of coke

then maybe just a splash of water with a lime

I just get mine on the rocks and let the ice melt a little. Sometimes a splash of water. I'm not a big neat person.

I'm all about this one. Hate that I developed such a taste for it and haven't been back to Specs to get a refill.

I like mine on the rocks with a couple of drops of cherry juice, kind of a poor man's Manhattan. And I prefer Knob Creek over Makers. It has more of a smokier taste.

Interesting, may try that in a minute. I THINK I have some cherry juice.

I filled a pint glass up about 2/3 with Bulleit and then dropped 3 cubes in it, that should hold me over for the next 45 minutes.

If you need the sweetness to help you, try finding a slightly sweeter bourbon with a smoother finish to transition yourself.
