Looking for some opinions.

I think that the beer rankings on Beer Advocate are generally quite accurate, but I have come to the conclusion that the rankings on Untapped are essentially useless.

For instance, some people seem to award a 4 to every beer that they find drinkable. Others seem to give approximately 1/3 each to two, three and four, with essentially no one or five rankings.

Personally, I score beer on a pretty stringent bell curve. If a beer earns a four from me, it is in my top 5-8% of beers. I have handed-out more than a few scores of “one”

So

1. What system do you use for ranking beer?
2. How do you use the rankings published on Untappd (or even Beer Advocate)?

It's a proprietary algorithm and I'd appreciate you to stay out of my personal affairs.

It's a 1-10 scale from 4.0-5.0

Not that hard to decipher.

Do y’all think that the Beer Advocate rating is a better indicator?

No. What it does is give you a wider scope of opinions. Taste is subjective. Everyone has a favorite flavor profile. Everyone offers their opinion on what's good or bad, better or best so you might be better off finding a group or person who's palate is similar to yours. I read the flavor description then if that interests me I'll take a look at the rating. I will absolutely try beers that have multiple folks offering favorable opinions but it is in no way my deciding factor.
