It blocks direct heat when placed near the firebox if the pit is full. Even if the pit is not full and you have briskets on say the second half, you would still put blocking logs to interrupt the flow of smoke and create a tumbling effect while still being the first thing to take the heat.

I must have stayed pretty close to you. I was shacked up at the South 400 Apartments for almost a week. You are lucky to have all those places right there. Can’t wait to try Panther City for lunch, have only had their breakfast.
