Troubleshooting Grill Problems: New(ish) grill is not hot enough

My father gave me a new grill for my birthday back in October. It's a Char-Broil Performance 4 Burner grill that he swears by. In fact, he does nearly all of his cooking and baking on his grill.
For $250, I wasn't expecting something world class, but the burners on high barely get hot enough to sear anything. Preheating the grill on high for ten minutes gets enough heat to do barely a sizzle.
It cooks fine and I will say that I can bake well on it. However, I can't cook steaks or use a cast iron griddle to cook burgers because it doesn't get hot enough.
The side burner on the other hand is scorching hot and on low will burn food rather easily.
Just typing this out has me thinking that there could be an incorrect hookup between the side burner and the 4 burners for the grill.
Any thoughts on this?
I didn't use it much the past few months due to weather issues. It's probably too old for a warranty claim, and I'm not even sure where the paperwork is if I wanted to make a claim.

Does his get hot enough to do the things you mentioned? To me this screams something is off with your propane connections and or the regulator...

He says it does. He doesn't cook steaks though, so I'm not sure he's ever tried to get his grill screaming hot.
Can I fix propane connections or the regulator myself? I don't want to blow up the house.

They have a fail safe valve on all propane grills that does not allow valve to open up all the way if you light your grill wrong.
What is the process to light your grill?

This.
I've seen it happen with crawfish burners too.

if you have a second regulator, change it out and see if that helps....if not, change the tank to see if that helps also.
It does seem as if it is a "flow" problem.
also check the manual.

I'd suggest getting new ones if some of the other suggestions in this tread don't pan out. Sometimes all in one type grills will have low quality hoses/connections even if the grill is good quality (I have a Char-Broil myself and it works great).
I'd never recommend anyone working on a regulator themselves. If that gets messed up things could go boom...

Turn 2nd burner to “ignite” symbol and push button to ignite. Then turn other burners on as needed.

Do you have the lid open?
I have to open the lid on mine. Then put burner to "ignite"/twist propane top to open full. Then ignite while lid is open.
Sometimes if try to light too quick after turning on propane then it switches to the fail safe and it won't get above a certain degree temp.

Yeah the lid is open. I do press the button quickly. I’ll try waiting a few seconds to light it.

I know if you don't have the knobs switched to off, and you open the valve on the propane tank, you will have issues.
Sometimes this causes the bypass to trigger.
It's worth googling "How to reset a regulator", I've also seen it called "burping a regulator"
I've always had all knobs in the off position, open the propane tank to full blast. Then light the grill.

If none of the suggestions work see if your Dad has the receipt, it should have a one year warranty.
