The new ones they have opened since selling off a portion of the company just aren't the same as the original ones before they sold out. Food isn't as good and the service is freaking terrible. The one at Weslayan and Bissonnet is one of the newer ones and it blows. Food is ok but the service is god awful.

Yeah they’ve been consolidating the past couple years to make them more chain friendly

Taking out a lot of the specialty tacos off the menu, switching from Maine root to regular coke products, things like that.

There is nothing better for a hangover than a ice cold Maine root Mexican cola and some greasy food. Was a sad day when they switched that out

Now slap box pizza is my go to for grease and sugar

Agreed. Right before they announced their aggressive expansion plans, there was a noticeable drop in quality.

The actual food is still good, but some of my favorite tacos are no longer on the menu, the cola switch sucks, and as others mentioned the service feels like fast food now.

Have you ever been to that place? I'm genuinely curious how its patrons are. I've heard it's pretty rough.

Is that the bar in the same shopping center as Via 313?

Haven’t been in. During that window when bars were allowed to reopen, I was over that way and saw about 5 or 6 older looking people (I’m 29 for context) smoking outside the door.

There is a big lack of bars in this area, which sucks. Or at least did before COVID

Have you hit up Evangeline Cafe yet? If yes, what'd you think?

Nope, haven’t been. My in-laws went and enjoyed it, but they aren’t from LA.

Cypress Grill also looks like solid Cajun food. I plan on checking it out eventually. It’s hard for me to convince myself to go out for LA food in Austin.

That’s how I feel about anywhere outside of Louisiana. Unless the place is showing a saints/lsu game with a nice crowd, I don’t go to “cajun” places. Hell, even when I went to shoal creek for a game, I didn’t eat anything.

I only went to Shoal Creek once, for the UT game. Mostly just ate fried food and they had surprisingly decent boudin.

I learned shortly after that I much prefer the atmosphere at Rustic Tap for LSU games - and I’m not a big fan of West 6th.

Cypress is ok. I wouldn't go there expecting something authentic. The food is good but it doesn't taste like home.

Give Evangeline a shot. It's about the only legit place that I've been to. The owner is from Lake Charles and it feels like home on the inside. I can vouche for their gumbo (both C&S and seafood), roast beef poboy, oyster poboy, alligator sauce piquante. Their lunch specials are very good too. $9 for a full poboy and cup of gumbo.

Shoal Creek is a fun place to watch a game but their food is pretty blah.

Good to know. My wife often craves a roast beef Poboy so I’ll be checking it out

You have to go up north for it but Stuff’d is a decent Cajun shop if you’re having some boudin cravings or other meats in the realm.

I think Lavaca is closing one of their locations. Not many people getting 18 dollar shrimp po boys to go I guess.

theres some riff raff for sure but it has been redone several times over the last few years. they were running a speak easy during quarantine. tends to be the older oak hill crowd, but you arent going to get jumped or anything, just be annoyed by some older white trash.

boomerz gets a suprisingly younger crowd. boomerz is fun they have pool and games and stuff.

Rustic tap basically eviscerated shoal creeks clientele, I kind of feel bad for them

I went to Stuff’d a couple of times to grab a sack of crawfish. A buddy of mine used to work there. He said the food is good, but I haven’t tried it yet.

If we have sports this year, I’ll check rustic tap out.
