I would agree, because most throw shrimp in way too early and it becomes an afterthought. I don't have an issue to throw some in just 5 minutes before serving, though. But clearly, not needed in a saus/chik gumbo.

I've made gumbo with everything from Mahatma long grain to basmati to jasmine. Little to no difference in taste, as all of the aromatics are lost/overwhelmed. The only real sin in doing so is that you are "wasting" aromatic rices in gumbo, but if the cost difference isn't important to you, it's really not going to have much of an impact on the final product.
At this point, I'll make white rice if I have it, but if I'm out, I'm not running to the store to pick up another bag if I have another white rice in the pantry.
