“Why tip someone for a job I’m capable of doing myself? I can deliver food. I can drive a taxi. I can, and do, cut my own hair. I did, however, tip my urologist, because I am unable to pulverize my own kidney stones.”

it really doesn't matter to me if someone leaves a tip or not. it's a nice gesture, but it's like we're not gonna have money to keep the place open without the tip.

Depends on the mood I am in and if she is cute or not!

Had this situation this weekend. Ordered at a counter in an airport where I knew the food was overpriced and going to be shitty. The chick was hovering over me while i struck a line through the tip.
What about Buffets? all they really do is get you a drink and bus your plates. usually leave a buck per person.

I tip in these situations solely on the server's attitude. If they are nice and efficient, 20% is no problem. If they are grumpy and disinterested, nada

I spoke to a friend of mine about this. He is a career waiter... Not just going it until he finds something better.
He said that in his restaurant, when you tip on take out, it goes into a fund that pays for broken glasses and comped meals that the employees would have to pay for. In other words, the owner gets it.

Well that's super gay. Guess I'll stop tipping if that's the case.
Generally, I give the coffee shop girl $1 because she gives me a discount on my refill and I feel bad that a college student has to wake up at 6 AM to open the coffee shop.

I can't believe this topic comes up so often on the OT. Is this really that big a deal?
The fact that you feel guilt should tell you that you should leave a small tip. Not what you would tip for full service obviously.
From my experience, bad tippers are almost always bad people in general. The way I look at it is this: You can always make more money, but you can never make up for slighting someone. Are you really gonna miss that dollar? Unless you get take out on a daily basis, we're not talking about much money over the course of a month or year.
