Good morning.
I obviously know that there is a food board. Admins if you would prefer it there that is fine however I want to get the OTs take on this subject.
Do you tip when picking up an order from a place you would normally sit down to eat? What about coffee shops? I usually use my debit card so I get the dreaded tip line for the transaction. I debate whether to put nothing at all because I wasn't waited on but then if I do tip I always wonder if you're supposed to tip the regular 20 percent. I usually end up giving a buck or two out of guilt. I hate writing a line through the tip area. With coffee I usually give a buck if they make the drink but nothing if they just pour me coffee.
Thoughts?

Maybe a dollar at the most. Sometimes, but just maybe. Depends. Def not a coffee shop though

I don't tip, but go through the same guilt phases at places like Brewbachers and Georges where the cashier takes your order and hands you your food.

I feel like the cashier doesn't really "serve" you, but the tip line is there as a hand-out option.

If I go into a diner and get food to go, I always leave a dollar or two. For example, this weekend I got 2 Western Omelettes on rolls to go. Left 2 bucks (OK maybe 1)

I usually leave about $1 per entree, so $2-3 for to go. It's more like 10%, but since all they really did was take my money and hand me food, I think that's plenty. I picked up mexican over the weekend and the girl that packed up my order didn't charge me for the extra side of guac, so I gave her $5 instead of $2, which is probably the exact reason she didn't charge me for it.

Do you tip on fast food?

If I do carry out I'm not tipping.

Might as well tip the gas station person who rings up your skittles.

No but if the tip line were there I'd probably feel guilty about that too. Your point is dead on though.

I just draw a line through the tip line on carryout.

Seriously a tip to me is weighed against what I would get if I was WAITED on.

I usually don't leave a tip if I'm picking up something to go. That's why I'm getting it to go. You don't tip the cashier at the grocery store. Basically the same thing

Some places charge a "packaging fee" with to go orders anyway

I give the dollar because the waitress had to go in the back and finish the order, pack it in the bag, put in packets of ketchup and napkins. Just a buck. But never at a fast food place

I frequently call in from a poboy place and am never sure whether to tip or not. I call in the order but they have a drive thru pickup window and it's already $10 for a foot long poboy

It's crazy how everything nowadays has a tip line. I picked something up from the tailer the other day and they had a damn tip line. Pretty soon there's gonna be one at the grocery store.

WTF?

Sweet Cece's has a tip line. My SO loves that place, and it cracks me up everytime we go there. I made the whole damn thing myself. What I am tipping for exactly? For a smile at the cashier? frick that.

ETA: I'd much rather get a blizzard from Dairy Queen. But sometimes something as simple as caving in for Sweet Cece's leads to piihb, so it's worth it.

Whenever I scratch a line through the tip blank all the hypothetical scenarios of how that person could defraud me and track me down flash through my head.

I hate that tip line.

Speaking of tipping, I wanted to "straight to the moon" my wife the other day when I found out she left a $20 tip at the bar when they already took out $20 gratuity on my tab...
