I was putting off reading this thread so that I might come up with my own ideas, but I think andouille hit it right on the head with his first post.
Travels to Mexico for me include Puerto Vallarta, which was all about seafood since it's on the coast. Great oysters and fresh fish were showcased, so I loves me some good fish tacos. If you've got an octopus and avocado app on your menu, I'm all over that as well.
When I lived in the big city, I found that the best Mexican food was at places where English was not spoken...same with Texas.
-1 for Casa Lavida on Coursey...unless you're into non-Mexican generic grub.

Why don't you say rice and beans? I don't think you are an authority just because you're using the spanish names of the food items. You sir are loco.

So...Baton Rouge doesn't have anything that is acceptable to anyone on this board?? After reading this I want me something good today.

After a year of living in Los Angeles, 3 years of dating a Mexican girl, and way too many trips to local authentic type Mexican places it's just a habit

ummmm..I'd say Tex-Mex and Chinese are not BR's strong points, but there are some places that don't suck. Now, we have middle eastern nailed down.

Good Salsa, fresh guacamole and should know how to properly cook flank steak not to be tough.
I like El Rancho. I notice a lot of local hispanics patronize this place.

margaritas, queso, guacamole, and the chips are the only things that matter to me.
