Was in Hammond over the weekend. Had dinner at the Steak House.

The Steak House is a very casual small restaurant with brick walls. Not much to it, but the steaks are very good. The menu isn't large and you order the steaks by the ounce. They're grilled and all of our steaks (7 of us) were cooked the way we ordered them with a nice char and lots of flavor.

We had several orders of chargrilled oysters, which were very good, not the best I've had but very good and some sort of chili shrimp app which was also tasty.

I think 4 people had a salad off the menu rather than the salad that came with the steak, plus a few sides. The mac and cheese was darn good.

We had 3 bottles of wine, plus 4 additional glasses, 2 martinis and a few old fashions. I think the bill was just over $300 including tax. It was a deal for the amount of food and the quality of the food. Service was excellent and the owners were friendly, visiting tables to make sure customers were pleased. I recommend it if you're in the area.

Grabbed a pulled pork sandwich at Hi Ho to see what the fuss was about with this place. I still don't know what the fuss was about. The meat and sauce were nearly flavorless and the sandwich was so full of sauce that it was falling apart before I could take the first bite. It was hard to eat and not that worth it, but I was hungry, so I ate what I could. I don't get the love for this place at all. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing. The sauce tasted like bland "liquiddy" ketchup to me. There was a generous amount of meat floating around in the sauce and that was the only positive if there was one.

Also hit Berry Town Produce on the way out of town. Love that place. First time in my life I'd seen fresh red beans in the shell. I'd have bought them, but I don't have time to shell and cook them this week. Also so another bean in the shell I'd never seen called horticulture bean. It was a fat white bean with a little purple here and there. Anyone had those?

Loaded up on some Liuzza's Creole tomatoes. Had one, last night, that was really good.

Dropped in B&J seafood next to Berry Town, as well. Picked up a few items. Very very nice selection of fresh seafood, fish, crabmeat, boiled crabs, crawfish tails... There were some "fresh off the boat" shrimp with the heads on which were beautiful. Didn't buy any since I couldn't use them this week, but if you live in that area and need fresh shrimp. I'd go there. The place is clean and there were no old seafood smells. Reminded me of some of the nice seafood stores in AL and FL. Excellent source for fresh seafood. I didn't pay attention to the prices. I think the fresh crawfish tails I bought were 13 bucks a pound and that's all I remember.

I've lived out that way all of my life and never been a big fan of Hi-Ho. Not exactly what I would call traditional BBQ. My family loves it and I'll eat it occasionally but I'd rather real BBQ.

B&J is a winner for the area.

Ima fan o the HiHo by the WalMart close to I55. Gotta eat inside. Gotta get a pork and cheese. Gotta get a beef and cheese. Gotta have a root beer. Will take a half a roll of papertowels. Overrated? Some will say that based on expectations and perception. I like it, eat there when given the opportunity, that being said.....my wife wont, so im usually alone.

Yep. I've always found that the only ones who really like it are locals who've never had real BBQ. My grandpa has been going there everyday for 30+ years, but other than WW2, he's never been out of SE Louisiana.

It's downtown and I couldn't tell you exactly where because I don't know Hammond well and I wasn't paying attention. I think it may have been the Red Caboose before if that makes any sense to you. Someone at the table mentioned that and I think the owner is either the son or the grandson of the owner of the Red Caboose.

It's a long narrow shaped no frills restaurant. Not all that big and it was packed when we arrived. We waited about 10 minutes for our table, but that was no big deal. I think I was told it was not open for lunch, but you could check on that.

one is the loneliest number that you'll ever do,
two can be as bad as one, it's the loneliest number since the number one.

Oh, I gotcha. The Caboose used to be a popular steak house down the road in Independence, La. Another Caboose was opened in Hammond, but it didn't fare well and now it's a Chinese restaurant. I think the one in Independence has since closed also. Someone told me that they were planning on opening another steak house in/around Hammond, but that was the last I heard of it. I'll have to go check it out

I really didn't get it at all. There was zero bbq flavor. Tasted like very bland crockpot pork in a watered down ketchup. Ketchup has way more flavor than that sauce had. It didn't even smell like bbq in the place or outside the building. I noticed that as soon as we walked in. I was very disappointed.

B&J was one of the better seafood markets I've been to in the state and I think Berry Town is a jewel, as well. Two great places for such a small town.

The Caboose must not have been in that building then. I was picking up pieces of conversation and it's pretty loud in the restaurant, so if you have more than 4 at your table, it's hard to hear everyone at the other end. I remember the owner's wife saying her husband had been cutting meat since he was a youngster. Whatever the story is behind the restaurant, it serves good food. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

The only downer of what I bought was the jumbo lump crabmeat. I don't recall the price. I didn't even look at it, to be honest. There wasn't much jumbo lump in it. It was mostly broken up a lot. Lumps on the top and the rest all broken, more like a mix of backfin and white. Would be good for stuffing. I made a West Indies salad with it last night. Tasted good, but was a wee mushy. Probably overcooked. The brand was Pontchartrain Blues. Maybe I got a bad pound, but I probably woulnd't buy that brand again unless it was all that was available. Even the worst of the brands I've gotten have had way more jumbo lumps than this did. They might get different brands in from time to time. Many seafood shops do that.
