I have an issue with my BGE not producing TBS but for an hour or so before it quits producing smoke at all. Mine is also weird because if you pop the lid open for split second, boom TBS for another 30 minutes. I have switched to using my pellet smoker but I am hard headed and determined to figure it out. Tell about your lump to chunk setup and you airflow setup.

Could be an airflow issue. Are you overloading the firebox with charcoal?

I typical fill up the fire box to the bottom of the fire ring.

When loading the lump, I try to put bigger pieces on the bottom and build up from there which I think helps airflow.

Fuel and air flow are really the only two variables.

Any time I’ve had this problem is when I didn’t have a hot enough fire at the start - inefficient combustion combined with lower air flow than a side box is my theory of why.

I use a looftlighter to get a hot, clean fire going and haven’t had a problem since.

Dunno on egg, but w primo xl… I start w big chunks of lump at bottom, get fire hot, smooth out temp… then add real pecan/apple wood for smoking.

Granted, I lost a big pecan tree n storm a couple years ago and split it for cooking. Hot coals, mid damper on top and bottom gives a long enough smoke for what is needed for meats.

What boss floss said, I get my fire settled too the temp I want then throw a few chunks of wood in there not the small shaved pieces and I don’t really have a problem…

Sounds to me like it definitely can be an air flow issue. Clean everything out really good and start fresh. I use Kamado Big Block, and havent had that issue, but I can see how it can easily happen with smaller charcoal.

I know everyone is different, but I do not smoke on my Kamado at less than 275. The kamado's are so efficient, a hotter fire will need more airflow, and in turn produce better clean smoke. As others have stated, its just airflow and fire.

What temp are you shooting for now?
