Sweet Potato Varieties

Last week I picked up two 40 lb boxes of sweet potatoes while in the country. Got one box of Orleans and the other Beauregards. I baked some of the Beauregards last week and they were delicious then last night I made a jambalaya and thought some baked sweet potatoes would be great with the spiciness of the jambalaya. I baked some of the Orleans as well as a few white sweet potatoes I picked up at Breaux Mart.
I found the white to be more fibrous, firmer and just not as sweet as the orange varieties.
The Orleans though were pretty darn sweet and delicious! I love baked sweet potatoes!
Sorry, no pictures from last night as the camera battery was dead.
Only picture I got last night with the phone.

I like the Japanese variety. Only ever found them at Whole Foods. They are a white type potato too but seem to have more sweetness closer to an orange and it's not fibrous at all. It's about the only thing I get from Whole Foods.

I love baked sweet potatoes. I'm from Avoyelles Parish, so I grew up eating them with gumbo. I'm always kind of amazed that other people in Louisiana don't know about this. Like I was talking to a lady from New Orleans who is a big shot with Rouses and she had never heard of this.
You did a nice job with your travelogue about going to get boudin and sweet potatoes. I'm real sure my parents bought from that same farmer. When I was a kid, I remember riding on some trips to around Hessmer to get sweet potatoes.

The sweet potatoes I've been given from Avoyelles Parish have always been delicious. This time of year you can also usually find 25 lb bags of them at Stelly's in Lebeau. I've bought those a number of times and they are also delicious. I don't know what the variety is, but I believe I was told they were grown in Evangeline Parish.

I almost stopped at Stelly's. Used to be a stop for a burger when I was a kid. It was a different kind of store/diner back then. Used to have all kinds of stuffed critters including a white raccoon. They even sold fireworks. Lol.....

There's still a big gator on the wall. They could have some other animals around, but I don't recall.
I get bored driving 49 between Alex and Opelousas, so I go that way quite often. It's actually shorter in time in spite of the speed limit and so much more interesting. I've gotten some of the best fresh picked corn on the cob right around Cheneyville on the side of the road. I love stopping at Lea's in Lecompte. I keep meaning to stop at that place in Bunkie and people say has a great burger, I believe. I can't remember the name right now. Bunkie also has people selling corn on the side of the road during the season.
I always stop at Stelly's. They've had corn before and some other vegetables in the store. I like to look at the pots and pans they sell in the restaurant. The little grocery store is neat, too. One year, I bought a bunch of fresh crawfish tails they'd just gotten in for a song. They were great. The little store generally has something locally grown for sale.
I don't know what the food is like in the restaurant now, but when I was child, I remember some darn fine seafood gumbo there.

Evangeline sweet potatoes are the absolute best. You can buy them straight from the producer in Fabourgh (Ville Platte area), E&L Farms

Here's a list by the LSU AgCenter of varieties grown in Louisiana. You may be talking about the Evangeline variety.
