Sushi Masa - Best deal in BR?

I was going to Ichiban with Mrs. Fury last night, and we just wanted to peak our heads in to Sushi Masa (next door, the old culinary school) to see what it looked like...they're owned by the same people as Ichiban, right? I knew it was an All-You-Can-Eat place, so I expected a trough/buffet set up like Nagoya. BTW...I've been known to get after Nagoya a few times. There was no buffet, but we were told it was all you could eat for $21.95 for dinner (only $13.95 for lunch).
We weren't really that hungry, but did some quick math, and figured we'd just each go the all you can eat route, and try several things. For all you can eat, you can choose from any of the sushi/sashimi they offer, most appetizers (including gyoza, tuna tataki, etc.), and several other choices. It's Ichiban's sushi, presentation, and freshness. You can just keep ordering and ordering...a piece of this, an app of that, specialty rolls, whatever. There were probably four people in there including us. If you're a sushi person, like it fresh, like getting to try different things, and doing it on the cheap...I definitely recommend this place. Was totally surprised how much we dug it.

It's good but don't waste your time with the specialty rolls. They have really good sashimi and tar tar dishes. The fish is way fresher than what you see on sushi buffets.
I'm pretty sure though that they aren't owned by ichiban.

Really? We dug on their Dragon, Caterpillar, and LSU rolls.

Not owned by same as Ichiban. How can you say it's "fresh" if only that few people eating at a dinner service. IMO no way they are turning over enough product to keep sushi fresh.
No I will say I did eat there and it was good for what it is, buffet sushi. I would in no way put on same level with any specialty rolls from other sushi places in town.

They are owned by the same people that own Hello Tokyo in Gonzales.

That's a good point about turnover and product, but it tasted and looked fresh. We sat at the bar, and watched the guys working on it. Fish smelled clean, wasn't coming apart, color looked bright. I will admit that I didn't watch them buy it from the market. It's not buffet sushi like Nagoya...which can get a little rubbery after sitting out, this was tender and tasted really good.

I went when they first opened and it was a buffet type for lunch at 13.95. It was an awesome deal because everything was restaurant quality and very good.
I wonder if for lunch they have a buffet but for dinner you can order as much as you want.
And yes, I would def say its the best deal in BR.

So is it like a menu you order from and they bring it to you nonstop?

The menu has a couple of pages to order from for the all you can eat, but also has a la carte pages. You order a few things, and hold onto your menu. You just keep ordering until you're done.

Well I know what I'm doing for lunch on Friday. Cheers!

Yes, but the menu clearly states that if you have any leftover sushi, you will be charged extra.
They are trying to prevent over-ordering for the sake of it being an all you can eat deal.
I just got back from there with Mrs Grizz and I have to say, we both enjoyed it and the the sushi was quality. I'm not sure if the dinner deal is quite worth it at 21.00, but lunch at 13.00 was a bargain.

I promise, I made it worth it.

The reason I say this is because many of those rolls are the same, just with one different sauce. We got a few of the rolls and realized there wasn't much difference to them.
I'm not saying they're all bad, but I prefer more sashimi style dishes than the snowcrab filled specialty rolls.

At night it comes with an alcoholic beverage so that's about a three dollar discount. My wife found a ten percent off coupon online the first time we went. The coupon was still available the second time we went but she was too embarrassed to use it again

The wife and I went there a couple weeks ago for lunch (over her objection). We both enjoyed the variety and freshness.
Waitress needed a better understanding of English, as we were quite confused about how to order and what the rules were.

I believe when you order a specialty roll, you get the whole thing, but I never asked, so maybe you can order just a few pieces. There is a decent selection of rolls and sashimi, so if you want you have plenty options instead of the larger specialty rolls.

Is it the same way, ordering off the menu for lunch? Or just dinner?
