"At the Thursday (Aug. 9) meeting of the Council, the Subway item appeared again on the regular agenda, right next to the return of the ice-cream shop as well — which Banks led the Council in voting, in a reversal from his May position, to deny. When the Subway item was read, the clerk said simply that it had been withdrawn “per the applicant’s request,” and no one spoke for or against it."

company wants to open a restaurant. then gets opposition. Changes it's mind. now the location is empty. Who benefits from this?

Is this the one where Subway thinks it is cheaper to just pay the rest of the lease rather than do a whole buildout and try to turn a profit?

Sounds like a franchisee is trying to block the area for some reason.

Isn't that what is happening at Smashburger as well?

Wasn't some TexMex joint supoosedly opening up there? Just give it 6 months and someone can move in to that boilhouse on the corner.

I don't remember if that is who the story was about or not. Just rings a bell.

I think this lays out both sides of the argument if you care to read.

“It erodes the New Orleans culture that is Magazine Street, said Betsy Stout. ”

“Allowing a fast-food restaurant sets a precedent for more of the same, which residents have made very clear that we do not want,” said Nell Carmichael of the Bouligny Improvement Association.

“Given the choice between going to Mahoney’s and going to Subway, I would likely go to Mahoney’s,” Banks said. “Unless I didn’t have a whole lot of money and couldn’t afford Mahoney’s. Then I would go to Subway.”

I'd add this:

"Council President Jason Williams chimed in with his opposition to national chains competing against local shops. Chains, he said, often have the “unfair advantage” of more capital to pay higher leases than locals, driving up rents for everyone."

Id choose to eat at home. Mahoney's is garbage.

At least they clean their sidewalk though, so that is nice

Good for you. So I don't get to make my own choice?

so, which is it? The fact that it's a fast food place? or the fact that the company can afford higher leases, driving up the rent for others?

either way i don't see the benefit of leaving the space unused.

Benefit of who? The owner of the building? Why would you care about that?
