I know you can buy strawberries almost all year long now, but for most of my life, they were only a springtime treat. The folks in Ponchatoula know that, because this is strawberry time in Ponchatoula.

Do yourself a favor and go buy a flat from them.

I bought a few pints yesterday from a guy on the side of the road. Now I have to figure out what to make with them.

First you make a roux...

Sorry, the devil made me do it.

I'll see what I can do tomorrow. Too late to think now.

Always wondered why Ponchatoula was the Strawberry capital. I have never seen any grown around there.

There aren’t many being grown anymore. I only eat strawberries when I can get Louisiana strawberries. When they are gone I wait until next year. A Mexican or California strawberry is grown for traveling not eating and have the flavor of a jar of paste.

Same with tomatoes. I eat with the seasons.

A pint of cut up fresh Louisiana strawberries cut in half and just dusted a small amount of sugar and allowed to macerate a few hours is about as good of a springtime dessert as can be had. Guild the lilly and put over ice cream or put a dollop of fresh whipped cream on them. Drizzle a bit of balsamic vinegar on them as well.

My cousins and I used to pick strawberries until we were all raw and pink to the elbows and knees. Uncle Dudley had one "hook" plastic arm after some accident, always freaked me out. If Ponchatoula isn't the strawberry capitol of the world my whole life is a lie LOL.

I'm absolutely sure they still grow the berries there. The plants look like squash, not obvious strawberries.

less than 300 acres cultivated this year according to the paper
unfortunately it’s dying out

too many subdivisions and too few field pickers
