Agave nectar is the best, tastes alot like honey but gets rid of the need for simple syrup and all that sugar

Simple syrup is totally unnecessary if you are using Cointreau, Grand Marnier, triple sec or agave nectar. 1 part high quality tequila, wife prefers silver, 1 part citrus (half fresh lime, half fresh lemon), 1 part Cointreau or Stirrings triple sec. Put in shaker with ice and shake the shite out of it and it is all good. The lemon gives a clean taste to the drink. We like Republic organic tequila, but I also like Espolon and Milagro, and El Jimador is good for when a lot of guests come over. Counted 11 different brands of tequila in the cabinet last time, guess we are stocked up.

I use bourbon instead of tequila, so that probably means it's not a margarita and more a whiskey sour. Whatever though, I wanted to make margaritas one night and had limes and triple sec but no tequila, so I subbed bourbon and enjoyed it more than tequila.
