But then again, people lie about how much they tip on here all the time to look like big shots to the Food Board snobs
Could be. When I ate at the Chimes in Covington the other night and the greasy oysters entree was taken off my bill, I tipped a good bit over 20% (of the total bill) because that wasn't the waiter's fault and he was a darn good waiter who went over and above for the table in explaining dishes and making recommendations. Brought us all a sample of a soup special because he knew it was spicier than most and wanted us to taste before ordering it. Nice touch. 20% is my minimum for decent average service. I gave the waitress at R&O's 30% on Monday. She was particularly good which isn't the norm there in my own experience. I've had some "barely there" and pretty rude waitresses there most of the time. I'm not lying though I don't really care if folks on a food board believe me. I'm not trying to be a big shot either. Later in life, I could very well regret my generosity.

The thought does run through your mind that one of your tables is being occupied by a couple sharing a salad instead of a few people ordering apps, cocktails, expensive entrees, etc.
That being said, you expect these things when you are a server. Although preferable, you can't expect every table to come in and drop $200 and tip 25%. Bad tippers, rude guests, and inexpensive tables are all part of the job.

And by the way, almost everybody tips 20% these days.
