So I've had my electric smoker for less than a day... Already planning this mod.

Basically you use the mailbox as a smoke box for an a-maze-n pellet smoker tray.

It feeds smoke up to your smoker at a constant rate for 8-10 hours. Smoker provides the heat for the meat.

If ya want to cold smoke cheese, bacon, jerky, etc. You are already set up to do so.

Thoughts???

Just google MES mailbox mod.

That doesn't mean it doesn't look "Mid-class Alabama" as frick.

What if the smoker was on a slate, granite, or tile topped outdoor kitchen and the mailbox was hidden????

I think outside the mailbox.

Besides... The point is to get good food out of it without having to feed wood chips every 30 minutes.

And mid-class is about as high as I wanna be anyway. Lol

Or you can do this.

Unless you have everything you need for the project lying around unused, it literally costs less than that improvised rig.

Looked at that, but it still uses a wood chip chimney that you have to feed regularly from what I understood.

ETA..says it will provide smoke for six hours though...

Anyone tried it?

From the reviews, even the good ones, people seem to be bitching about it's consistencey, wood chips hanging, too much smoke, etc.

From what I've gathered on the mailbox amazn pellet smoker mod is that it works really well and is very consistent.

It doesn't even have to be a mailbox, you could probably find any metal box they right size that was ventilated properly to hold the amazn pellet smoker or make a chamber of brick or whatever with a lid.

Most of that I see is from people not knowing WTF they are doing. Too much smoke in a smoker

The primary design flaw that you might want to improvise is separate the cold smoker from the base unit with dryer tubing or the like. Give the smoke a chance to cool before entering the main body.

A lot of issues with consistency will come from fuel variation. I know the manufacturer says to use wood, but why not use pellets of your alternative method? Should basically be the same (no personal experience on that front).

The way it feeds is the main issue I see with it.

Dude go for it if you want. I'm sure it'll work. Doesn't change the fact that it looks

Thread I read on people trying pellets with it said it burned really hot and really fast.

I don't care if I use pellets or wood chips, etc. Just looking for something that won't clog and will smoke for 8 or so hour without going out.

There are issues with the amazn pellet smoker too. But the mailbox mod seems to resolve all of them. (Drippings falling.on pellets, element making pellets ignite, too moist in smoker, etc. Id love to find a cheap nice looking box or attachment that would easily mount to the smoker instead of a mailbox if anyone has any ideas.

Why? If it works and assuming your meat turns out like you want it to, then stick with the mailbox method. Why do you give a shite what some dude on a message board thinks about how your smoker looks? Are you trying to smoke better or improve the aesthetics of your smoker?

Well I'm not against anything easier or more aesthetic that works just as well for the same price. But I haven't seen that yet, but would love to if someone has.

I’ve done the same. But I got the tube instead of the box. I put it on a rack under the drip pan. Fits perfectly, doesn’t require anything other than opening the door and putting it in.

You do know that masterbuilt makes a box that mounts on the side to do just that. I had that trey you are showing and couldn't get it to work very well. Google Masterbuilt cold smoker
