The demand part is what has kept the price so high the last few years. 20 years ago you couldn't hardly get crawfish very far outside Louisiana and now they truck them all over the southeast. Plus they now ship them overnight all over the country. Dallas, Okalahoma City, Atlanta, Birmingham, Tallahasse, etc all have demands for crawfish now.
Well if that is your analogy make sure to tell your farmer friends thanks for fricking the people that have paid their bills for 20 years with high prices because they can ship their crawfish other places now.

there's not a farmer I know that's gonna hold anything back unless the price drops below a dollar
quote:Sure that's part of it - but which do you hear the farmers say more often; that it won't be a good season b/c of supply, or that there is just too much demand?

look I really don't care if you believe what I'm telling you or not but I'm just trying to explain why the price has gone up over the last 10 years or so
if you don't like the price don't buy them and if enough people feel that way it will go down until they start buying them again

I think we need a crawfish regulatory committee if it keeps up like this. In a few years they will be $10 a pound. It's the farmers every year crying about "not enough crawfish in my traps waaaaa" but who actually knows what the supply is if we only listen to the farmers. That's like a stock broker being able to set the price of the stocks he wants to sell.

No big deal. The fact that you know so many crawfish farmers tells me that you'll side with them on this debate, so I don't blame you. I also don't blame them - as I said, this practice is certainly not unique to crawfish farmers.
And I never eat crawfish before late March anyway. Hopefully they'll find their way to the usual price point by then.

yellowfin is correct. The amount of crawfish being shipped out of the state is insane. Just like with crabs, they ship them out of state because they can get much higher prices in other areas. The people in LA won't pay the high prices that people in other states will. So while the farmers may have a good crop, the supply may still be low locally because of all the product being exported.

I believe you and I still think it's fricked up. I dont believe that the crawfish arent there though. I believe the farmers would rather ship em out for higher prices. And so I say "frick you" to them. If what your saying is true, not buying them wont lower the prices. It will just increase what they ship out of state.

quote:I agree this play a role. But it's odd that this is never a reason given by the farmer, isn't it? It's always about supply when they're asked. Exporting to other states, combined with holding back on the market has proven to be a winning combination for them, no doubt about it.

Last year I had friends in Austin boiling every weekend when we couldn't even get them. Not because they were pricey, because no one had any. So while the farmers cry to us about bad harvests, people in Austin have no problem getting them for a buck a pound cheaper. Explain that.

I know the wholesalers in the area were in cahoots together about how much they were buying and selling for. It was reported on the news but don't know if true.
and I agree, you sound like a whining dickbag. If you don't want to pay for them, don't buy them

The farmer really doesn't know or care where his crawfish go after selling them and gets the same price regardless. The farmer sells to a dock who sells to a distributor who brings them to a restaurant/seafood retailer who sell them to you.

Now that I dont believe. I think they have some control over where they go. If they are bringing them to a dock that sells to a local distributer then they probably know if they are going to be sold local or not. But hey, I guess I understand, they just wanna make a buck.

Troy from Swamp People is who you are mad at, he's one of the biggest wholesalers in the state and has a lot of say when it comes to price.

And to think that I have (older) relatives who won't touch crawfish because they still regard it as "poor people food." That's how it was when they were growing up (and poor as shite
)
