I have never laughed as hard as I did over the weekend. I have a buddy that smoked a boston butt for the first time over the weekend and the idiot told me that he picked a bunch of pear limbs up out the yard to smoke. This is not a joke, i promise. Thoughts??

I mean…it’s a fruit wood…you’re gonna need more than some branches but I’m sure it’s fine with pork.

Oh yeah, he used pine limbs too. Trying to use the sap as a binder..

Limbs will create the bad smoke you don't want to smoke with.

Don’t hot box it. Be sure to toast it before you light it and it should make for a pleasurable experience.

Depends on how big around the limbs are and how long they've been off the tree.
I usually buy my smoking wood at a store but if had a bunch of fruitwood limbs laying around the yard I'd give it a shot.
Don't use pine. That will taste like shite.

I remember back on Pitmasters Myron Mixon specifically saying he liked to use green fruit woods, especially peach. Now pine would be a totally different story, but I wouldn’t think much of throwing those peach limbs and giving it a shot.

he did not just throw thin limbs into the pit to try and smoke a butt

Never really depend on fruit woods solely for heat. Usually they are added along with your hardwoods. I guess you never know but I was assuming he wasn’t just throwing whole limbs in lol.

lol, He did not mention a primary heat source ..
also .. and you know this, throwing thin limbs in after an established coal source screws with the smoke.

The best smokes I've done on pork and chicken are with cherry wood, clean and very dry small split pieces. I love mesquite and red oak too, but the cherry just adds something great and has plenty of heat.
